You can them at REI or Big 5 (those are the only ones that come to mind right now). The day pass will cost you $5, the annual will cost $30. If you buy it at REI and you're a member, you can get either one of the passes at a slight discount.

maybe this is a little harder b/c of being a bit longer!! than u have u add the drop back down!! if u're not in shape u dont want to try that fast Single track all wasted or with little on the tank!! I think u can do IT no prob! again u can quit and take the road on the way down if it's too much.

I don't know anything about this ride... how far is it from Orange County is my first question.. Second, am I going to have to lie to my girlfriend like "honey, I have to work and have an appointment in Palm Springs and will be back late".. or what. Just looking at about an average number of hours we'll be out riding if we start at 8:30am since it looks as if it's not a shuttle after all
?

It takes me 35 minutes from Corona driving like the Road Warrior, what you tell your lady friend is up to you , and the plan is no stopping what so ever, 3 hours up and back !!!!!
Actually 4-5 hours should do, it looks like a pretty big group so far!

Why lie? Bring her with you. I'm sure one of us has an extra mountain bike she can ride....

On the pass thing, if you buy a pass for $30, you can get a secondary pass for another $5. Passes are not car specific so you can use them on any car you want. Point is: find someone to buy a pass with and get a year pass for $17.50. I buy mine at REI because I get me yearly refund. While you are at REI, buy some Smart Wool socks, they keep your feet warm when they are wet.

Passes are good for Angeles, San Bernardino and Cheveland National Forests.

For those that have never rode this trail it takes more out of ya than it looks like on paper. To go from one end (Post Office) to the other (South Fork) and back takes a good strong rider it is 28 miles, see profile below. The bailouts are not good unless someone leaves transportation down at the bottom, by the river on Seven Oaks Road. Then you can go downhill on Middle Control Road or Glass Road back to your car. Parking at Angelus Oaks is a high point.

hey dean,
is the fireroad to the 38 considered "south fork"? or do you guys turn around and ride back?

If you drop in past at the Post Office the first dirt road you cross is Middle Control Road. Stay on SART and the next road you cross is paved that is Glass Road. Keep going on the SART and the next road you hit is Highway 38 at South Fork Campground. This is a very rough description as there are different ways to do that trail.

You can get off the SART and drop down Glass Road to take the dirt section of Seven Oaks Road that follows the Santa Ana River to South Fork.

Frankos Big Bear Map shows the SART.

Like Steppie was saying....

This is no easy ride. If you haven't rode at least one epic before ( not that this is) you really should wait for a shorter easier ride. I've seen strong riders bonk on this ride before and I've had some tough days out there too. That being said, if you do the whole route you won't be disappointed, it is a beautiful place and the ride can be fast and furious.
