Default Ken Burton Trail Maintenance - 2/17

Date: Saturday, February 17
Place: Ken Burton Trail
Time: 7:45 am - 3:00 pm

Directions: We will meet at Millard Canyon Campground Parking lot.
From the 210 Freeway, exit Lincoln Ave.,in Pasadena. Head north 2 miles, turn right on Loma Alta Drive, the flashing yellow light is Chaney Trail, go left about 1 mile to to the parking lot at the end of the road.

What: We will continue our work on the Burton Trail in the Angeles National Forest near Brown Mountain. Last September we cleared the top 1 1/4 miles of trail and it is looking really nice now. We have one mile to go and the trail will be complete. We hope to finish it in one day. The remaining section of trail just needs some minor brushing and tread work. There is no Poison Oak on the lower section of the trail until you get to the bottom of the trail. If you are very sensitive to the Oak you can stay away from the bottom section. We will carpool up the Brown Mountain Road 6.5 miles to the top where the Burton trail is located. Another option is to ride your bike to the top and meet us there. We could use a few trucks or SUV's to shuttle everyone to the top. If you have a vehicle we can use that would be great. Send Hans an e mail to let him know at hans@corbamtb.com Once at the trailhead we will hike down the trail 1 1/4 mile to where we will start the trail work.

I think I would like to climb Brown Mt. then ride down to the worksite. Then finish off the loop. Anyone else with me?

I agree Dean. Maybe we can carry a trailer with tools too.

Good, I changed from Maybe to Yes.

What time should we start? Park at JPL? Remember I am coming from South Orange County.

You tell us. I'm 10 minutes from the trailhead. The event starts at 7:45 so if we ride we will be late either way.

I will leave at 6:30 am that will put me at JPL at 7:30 to 7:45am. That way we will not be to far behind. I would guess that we will not be the only ones trying to make this into a ride and not all work.

We will meet at the Millard Canyon Campground parking lot at 7:45. By the time we load up and drive to the top it will probably be 8:30 am. If you guys leave at 7:30 am you should be to the Burton Trailhead at about the same time as we get there.

In case you guys are late we can carry tools down the trail for you or I could leave the trailer unlocked if you want to grab a BOB trailer and a few McLeods.

There are a few slides that I want to fix. The rest will be brush clearing.

For those of you wanting to drive up with us I can fit seven in my Explorer. We could use one or two more vehicles that can drive up if any one wants to volunteer to drive there vehicle up.

Hey guys. I am not going to be able to attend trail maintenance this Saturday. Sorry. I need to spend time with my wife getting her ready for our first day on the motorcycle on Sunday. She needs to practice slow speed maneuvers on two wheels.

Thanks to all you guys that showed up to help out on the Burton Trail on Saturday! We made it about 3/4 of a mile further down the trail. There is about 1/3 of a mile left that is a little overgrown and at the very bottom the switchbacks are thrashed. When we built the bottom section it was summer time and we did not realize there was an artesian spring right on one of the switchbacks. One of these days we will do a reroute of that section. For now it is walkable.

So get our there and ride it! If you do not want to deal with all the stream crossings on the Gab you can do like I do and go to the bottom of the Burton then turn around and climb back up it!

By the way Dean I had the ice chest with cold drinks in the car. I should have left it in the trailer! I even brought beer this time! Funny thing is I never bring beer and people always say what no beer? This time I had beer and no one drank them!
