Default Thanks STR and GeoLadder Guys!

I was toward the top of Holy Jim doing some trail maintenance. Well actually I had just ran out of gas with the chain-saw and decided to take a bit of a nap. Anyways, a few STR and Geo guys showed up and helped me move a fallen tree. I would have been there for another hour or two if it wasn't for their help. It was nice getting to see some of the faces to the names on the boards. Anyway-thanks for the help and good luck on the training.

Welcome Andy. I was wondering when you might show up over here. There's a few posting Warriors here too.

No SS forum, we are too busy riding to be wasting our time posting.

But you can thank Mike for getting a Roadie Forum started.

Hey Andy, It was a small consolation knowing we helped you as we rode down Holy Jim.....past all of the volunteers busting tail to do maintanence work. I really felt guilty the rest of the way down. We gave OCrider a bit of a hand farther down the trail as well.
Major thanks to all of the volunteers working on holy jim today!!!

I've been riding mountain bikes for 20 years now. It was after 15 years that I finally figured out that I need to give back to the mountain. I spent years "tearing up" the switchbacks and not really knowing why it was so bad. Now that I have been doing trail work, I appreciate the trails in a whole new way. Joining SHARE and become a Warrior Society member really showed me the light. This year I plan on doing a lot of racing, but even with a busy schedule and way too much training to do, I feel it is absolutely imperative to maintain the trails. I hope you all either see the same way or at least can appreciate this view point.

I agree.....working on the trails definately makes you think twice about how you treat the trail when you ride them.

I'm glad we could do something to help. I felt guilty for riding through piles of cut branches and making the volunteers wait for us to pass.

Andy made the paper (at least I think that's him in the shorts):

Monday, January 8, 2007
Time to pitch in

County parks, outdoor and conservation groups depend on volunteers to help with programs.

By SHAWN PRICE
The Orange County Register
Attention outdoorsy types: County parks, outdoor recreation groups and conservation organizations always are underfunded and understaffed. The needs will always outweigh the resources. That's where youcome in.
Volunteers are a highly valuable commodity. If you're retired, looking for a potential career, trying to live up to some New Year's resolutions or just need an excuse to get out of the house, there is a need for you. Pretty much whoever you are.
"Last year we had volunteers donate 4,000 hours," says Trude Hurd of Sea and Sage Audubon. "We couldn't run our programs without our volunteers. The majority are retired, but we get a lot who work part time a few days a month."
Hurd believes it's a gift that goes both ways.
"It's give and take; they get as much reward out of it as we get from them. They get to work in a wetland, and we get their help in running our programs."
Jonelle Yamasaki of the Ocean Institute in Dana Point says there is a niche for everyone.
"We get a little bit of everything and all ages. A lot of people tend to think of volunteering as paper work, but we have a lot of fun volunteer programs," said Yamasaki, whose institute is always looking for some one to work the decks of the tall ships or help on whale-watching trips. "You can see a lot of interesting stuff on the water."
Newport Beach's Environmental Nature Center has had a very successful partnership with local eagle Scouts, who have completed more than 40 projects at the center. And their work paid off for the scouts as well.
"It's been a tremendous community service," executive director Bo Glover says. "Several of them have gone on to careers in education and the outdoors because of our program."
But scout troops can't get it all done, Glover says. Volunteers of all ages are vital.
"The more we get the better we'll be able to serve the community. Throughout the year, there's always something different," he said.
Taking the opportunities, whatever they are is perhaps the most important thing, says Laura Cohen of the privately-owned Donna O'Neill Land Conservancy.
"For all the people interested in the environment, it's a matter of thinking globally and acting locally. There's many ways to do that."

It would have been nice if they had mentioned SHARE and/or The Warriors.

If I look closely at the photo I guess that could have been me, but since I know what I was wearing and since I don't own a vest, I would have to say that wasn't me. Thanks for thinking of me though. If it was me, there probably would have been a beer in one hand and a chain-saw in the other. What a combination!!!!!
I'm enjoying the new community of the STR. Maybe I'll get to ride with you all some day.
