I won't be there. I am in horrible shape and that's a bit of a drive from South OC. Two points I would like to make.

1. I used to run there when I was in High School, I bailed hard just running!

2. Aldo (banana seat) good ride today, you rule.

gurp, gurp, gurp...I feel terrible. We took off from the trailhead close to 12:30. About a quarter of the way up the paved road I realized we were missing someone, with all the new people along on the ride I got confused. If you drove all the way out and we were not there, my deepest apologizes.

bananaseat, Burner, John, and I had a great time on Friday. The road climb was a b!tch as usual but overall the climb was not too bad. I was having all kinds of mechanical issues, rear brake issues, ghost shifting, you name it. I was religated to my grannie gear, which used to be fine but now I'm so strong I need smaller gears when climbing (yeah right).

Two crazy things and one awesome thing on the climb. Crazy #1: The wind picked up significantly on the dirt section of the climb. We estimated 40mph gusts. It was hard to pedal into it. At some points the wind just stayed up in the trees. It sounded like the trees were angry.

Crazy #2: I found the very lower portion of a deer leg right in the middle of the dirt road. There was a little bit of fur by the hoof, other than that it was just bone and hoof.

Awesome #1: The views throughout the day were amazing. The sun shining off the ocean and the dark land was a beautiful thing.

My wife took my camera to work on Firday so I don't have any photos. Burner took a bunch. Maybe when he gets finished with Palm Springs he will post a few.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hey, Brian, no worries, I wasn't able to make it. I'm going to have to hook up with you again some other time. Glad you guys had a good time. I was tending sick kids. It's all good!

We had a great ride! The San Gabriels always deliver.

I guess my cam felt like taking crappy pics that day, cuz not much came out. here's what I got.... you can see the deer leg in the pic of brian on his bike.

Wow I'm glad you did show up and no one was there gurp.

Matt I love that picture of the deer leg. That thing looks so nasty in the photo. I will make sure to have my camera with me for the Backbone ride.

D@mn it I forgot to have Matt take a photo of the Sunset RIDGE trail sign. Mike I swear there is a new metal sign to the left of the trail at the top of the Sunset Ridge Trail. It clearly calls the trail Sunset Ridge and even has the Forest Service code (2W34 type thing). Next time I'm there I will snap a picture.

great ride guys. good to meet you mtbmaven, and ride with you burner.

my OC brethren, if you haven't been out there i highly recommend it. i can get out there from north oc (without traffic) within 45 minutes. maple springs - like climb, and a decent that IMO is better than motorway & trabuco.

favor to ask of mtbmaven and/or burner, can someone list the trails we did, from start to finish with total milage. i'm curious regarding the length of our climb and total decent.

i'd be very interested in riding this place again real soon.

I'll add distances once I check the GPS... but I think the climb up chaney/mt lowe to inspiration pt is about 7 miles.

here's the route:

we climbed chaney trail / mt lowe railway

descended middle merrill

cut across (with slight climb) on echo mountain back to chaney.

took sunset ridge trail down to the cars.

Aldo I try to get them boys out of OC and into some real mountains all the time...I am rarely successful. That trail does rock and there are some other gems out there that I like more.

Once you get past the pavement I like to ride all the way up to Easton Saddle and hit Upper Merrill to. Once the pavement is out of the way it is a easy spin to the top of Mt. Wilson.
