Smile VQ/CC Training ride 12/9

Jose suggested another Blackstar/Motorway ride however how about Harding Truck Trail to the peak and down Holy Jim as a shuttle ride?

Place your votes.

Ann and I are in for this one. I can extend my rack to accomodate 4 bikes, if needed. Just let me know. Oh yeah, Saturday would work best and we're voting for Harding to Holy Jim.

Come on....sack up. Park at Cook's Corner and ride up and over the Grade, up Harding to the Peak and over, down Holy Jim and back up Live Oak. The extra road miles are good for you. What kind of training does shuttle do?

The shuttle avoids riding on Live Oak canyon which is pretty narrow and attracts fast drivers. I dont mind doing the full loop myself though.

Stats on the shuttle run are: 24.5miles, 4300ft of climbing.
Full loop: 33miles, 5800ft.

I might be in on this ride. Anyone want to park at cook's and descend via Joplin/STT/Luge?

Riding back on the road is not fun to me, especially when there is no emergency lane or bike lane on Live Oak. If I wanted to ride road, I'd be supporting the roadie forum.

Joplin/STT would be fun but its all about the CC/VQ route man!

We did the Harding-Upper Holy Jim (Revised) loop listed on GeoLadders Saturday. This route keeps you off the road except in a just a couple spots. It's a great ride with some good climbs. The first mile on Trabuco Canyon Rd doesn't have a bike lane. The other road section is basically Cooks to the Harding Trailhead. Nice trip through O'neil keeps you off of Live Oak Canyon.

Ya missed my point......YOu sign upa nd decide to train for a very gruelling ride......either 46 miles 8000+ feet of climbing or 56 miles with 11000+ feet of climbing. On your training ride you only do 24 miles with 4300+ feet of climbing and shuttle approx. 7 miles and 1400 ft of climbing. Saddle time is what is needed to train for this event. Just think that you cutting yourself short.

That road is not as bad as you think. Cars drive through there much slower than you think.....especially as soon as they see a bunch of cyclist.

Yeh right! that is why there are so many trees out there alongside the road without bark. Only takes one drunk! I am tried and sadened reading about bikers being hit by cars.

Thinkfast has it right, go through O'Neil on Live Oak Trail to Aliso Bike Path.

I've ridden that road before I agree that road is not bad at all.Its very gradual climbing and only takes another 15-20 min if that. Not even worth shuttling.

So its the full Harding/HJ loop. Saturday 8am at Cooks Corner sound alright? I think I've bent my derailleur back enough for it to survive until the new year - hopefully it'll get me through this ride anyway!

Considering all the memorials set up lately (2 throughout the canyon, if anyone else was counting on the way out to Holy Jim--one a cyclist, IN the MARKED bike lane, on an open road), I think I'd prefer the shuttle....we can always go up West Horse Theif/Trabuco if we need more miles/time in the saddle. Plus, we'll be on the dirt, which seems more like a mtn bike training ride than the road.

Then again, people scare me more than mtn kitties (they're less predictable and talk on cell phones), so maybe I'm just paranoid....

I would be interested in Joplin/STT/Luge. Another option that I have been thinking about is Santiago Oaks: 3b - Bobcat followed by 3b - Waterfall and finishing on 3b - Chutes... That would be equal to a little less than 3000' of ascent with fun dh and some additional playground action...

Doesn't matter to me as long as there is some fun downhill involved.

My Geo-riding buddy has given me directions through O'Neil to get to Aliso bike path so the good news is that apart from Cooks Corner to Harding we wont be on the road.

Chelle if you want to Shuttle then Andy and Annie (Sprockethead and Slowspokes) might shuttle too - pm them.
