Default SART Ride ** Moved to Sunday 11/19 **

Santa Ana River Trail

Start: Angelus Oaks, CA @ 8am
Length: ~24 miles of singletrack
Approximate Riding time: Expect an all day ride
Technical difficulty: Intermediate. Rolling singletrack. Fireroad climb out.
Trail surface: singletrack, creek crossings, meadows and forest roads.
What bike to bring: Singlespeed to full suspension
Hazards: Various spots along the trail are exposed. Poison oak occurs along the trail (at the creek crossings). There might be bugs, so bring some repellant just in case
Fees: Adventure Pass.

I don't think there's any snow up there, but we'd better go check anyway. Meet at the turnout, which is just north of the restaurant/gas station (see Google Maps for turnout location). We'll start at the post office and make our way to South Fork Campground. I don't think the campground is open, which means we won't be able to fill up on water.

Hopefully we can get a few more people to show up on Sunday, than on Saturday.

I'm in and I have a swanky new helmet cam we can mess around with.
I have a buddy on the fence about this ride.............how much climbing can he expect? I want him to come along but he is new to mtb and I don't want him hating it.
Jose, I am staying up at the cabin on saturday night if you want to come up the night before?

1x1clyde: how much climbing can he expect? I want him to come along but he is new to mtb and I don't want him hating it.

The first half of the trail you'll climb about ~4,000' over 12 miles. You don't really feel the climbing, as it's very gradual. At the half way point, if your buddy is feeling tired, he can opt to take the pavement back to the car.

If he decides to take the trail back the way we came, there is a 2 mile fire road climb out, but it's not steep. However, it may seem tiring after riding 20+ miles.

new2mtb: is sart tougher than strawberry peak ? how much tougher ?

SART is not as tough as Strawberry Peak. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being toughest), I'd rank Strawberry Peak as a 7 and SART a 5.

If'n ya'll don't mind, I'd like to join you for this ride. Any other SS'ers going? I've never ridden SART before. Is it very rocky/technical for a rigid rider?

Very SS friendly. Justin and Jose will be SSing. Trail is not rocky, maybe like McGill tech, as in none. Climbing is short up and downs, even if you climb the pavement out at the end it is not that bad.

I mentioned McGill because that was the trail we almost met each other on. Our friend Mike, Mr Painfreak, was too busy injoying the downhill to introduce us.

And welcome aboard,

Justin, no snow. Bring a water filter, lots of water in Santa Ana River. I would come but: One, I am to slow for you guys, Two I am out of town, and Three trail work going on that day.

Is it a SS ride? 29 or 26? Rigid or 80mm's? Steel or Aluminum?
I was hoping to use my Yeti but if we are 1x1ing it, let me know...I'm finishing my PUSS build today.

Well that settles that. I be bringing the rigid, steel, 26" SS. Being I've never ridden the SART, what kind of temp difference should I be prepared for? Is it potentially frigid on top and warmish at the trailhead?

I'm hoping the Google map directions are accurate. I hate to drive 120 miles just to get lost.

Default ** Ride Update **

The weather forecast for Sunday 11/19 at Angelus Oaks will be in the upper 40s (when we start at 8am) and reach ~70 later in the day. So expect to freeze until we get moving.

The ride will last beyond 12 o'clock, so bring along some extra food. Dean mentioned that there was water running the streams, so I'll bring along my water filter. But bring enough water "just in case".

We will be splitting the group into two groups.

group 1

klutter
shinken
singletrakk
upchuck
new2mtb
khai

group 2

1x1clyde
+ newbie(s)?

Group 1 will start at the afore mentioned turnout at 8 am.

The Group 2 will start at Southfork Campground at 11 am. Hopefully, Group 1 can make it to Southfork Campground by 11 am to rendezous with Group 2. From there, we all ride back to the turnout. When we get to the turnout, 1x1clyde's group can get a ride back to their car.

1x1clyde : Jose mentioned that you "sort of" knew how to get to Southfork Campground. In any case, heres a google map link to the Southfork Campground (Google Maps). Since you'll be coming from Big Bear, Southfork Campground will be on your left. However, you will park in the lot that is on your right (where the cabins are at).

********************************************

So are tomorrow's plans clear as mud???...good. See you all then. And be sure to bring along your Adventure Pass. You'll need it regardless of where you're starting at. If you need my contact info PM me.

Bad news. I'm going to miss out on the ride. We have a horse that just developed colic. Could be a long night. Have a great time. I'll catch you all on the next one.
