Default Sullivan Canyon Question

[FONT=Garamond]
Am new here, so excuse me if this is a stupid question:

When you ride Sullivan Canyon (i've ridden once, but I think I rode it backwards, so killed most of the fun for me...plus I was a smoker at the time and damn out of shape!), do you usually park on the Sherman Oaks side (a.k.a. off Hayvenhurst) and ride up and down (and up), or do you go the Sunset Side?

Basically, the question is...where's the best place to park for this ride?

Thanks for any help guys!

Mix it up . Keep it fresh. Don't get stuck into doing anything the same way every time.

Good advice for general life. I appreciate it. But, by the same token, it's always nice to have some basis for beginning. So...iallow me to re-phrase my previous question:

if you were going to do this ride for the first time ever, where would you park?

From Sunset, go north on Mandeville cyn rd. Take a left on Westridge. Go uphill for awhile and take a left on Bayliss and park. Ride the bike down Bayliss and go left on Queensferry. It will deadend at a gate. Go around the gate and downhill. This is where the bottom of Sullivan starts. Watch where you park on Bayliss/Queensferry, they have some parking restrictions towards the intersection.

I normaly park on Queensferry, ride up to Westridge continue on the Westridge fire road to the Nike site. Hang a left on Dirt Mullholland and then go Sully Canyon. At the end of Sully you will need to climb (short) up the paved road go through the gate and your car should be in sight.

If you're interested in doing a loop sometime let me know.

Right on guys...thanks for the tips. I'll have to get out there and try it. When i'm confident I can hang without having a heart attack and freaking out any potential riding partners, I'll give you guys a shout

Thanks guys, for all the support . When I'm a little more confident that I can keep up with somebody without having a heart attack, I'll give you a shout.

ok...so I haven't quite figured out how to post either. Wow...what a noob. Sorry!

Default Woodland Hills - easy drive

Go to the the end of Reseda Blvd, right to the top. You'll see a lot of cars parking just below the white line. Above the line and you have to pay a fee. Get on the bike, 1/8 mile of dirt and you hit Mulholland - go left to Sullivan Fireroad. Less than a mile down and there's the road/trail into Sullivan Canyon. Go have fun.

Go down if it's your first time... more fun.
Also, if you're riding on sun. or sat. morning, watch your speed because there's is a ton of traffic during those days.

Really fun ride... rode it today actually and it's in pretty good shape though some of the fun sections are eroding b/c of all the traffic.

Dude, ride with people who are better than you. Trust me on this. Nearly everyone I ride with is better than me. But, the thing is, I've gotten way better as a result. Don't wait until you think you can hang. If people are decent and all, they should have no problem hanging with you or at least waiting for you to catch up.

Bottom line, I have always been honest with people about my abilities. My first ride with someone from here was on a pretty easy trail and at what I now realize is a pretty easy pace. But, it nearly killed me. I thought I was going to DIE. I wanted to die. But, that ride put a fire under me to improve. I made it my mission to be able to ride faster and further. If I didn't push myself by riding with these guys, I probably would still be making excuses for why I don't ride more.

The best thing I can say is that there are several guys on this board who have taken the time to show me how to ride, given me tips, and most of all waited for me when the trail was kicking my ass. I have never been "dropped" on a ride. And, for that, I am grateful. Because it helped me go to and experience some of the best riding that I never dreamed was possible. These guys took me on trails when I was ready for them. They helped me get better and helped me stay in the sport. Thanks!

first off, welcome to the site! I agree with glen that its better to ride with someone more experienced then you since it makes you push harder. I first started riding with a bunch of hammer heads and they used to kill me on all the climbs. Now a days i'm just a little behind them now. Anyhow, i'll be up in your area thanksgiving weekend if you want to meet up and ride some where..
