So far we are talking about moving the ride further up the road and ride Burkhart Trail. Exact route still being discussed, my suggestion was Buckhorn Station to Burkhart Saddle but that may not be enough miles...so we may through a Chilao Loop in the mix.

Meeting at the Highway 2 and Highway 210 and carpooling the rest of the way. Meeting time not decided yet.

Ride discussion on EpicRiders
.

Note: if we do ride Burkhart, we all will need to walk our bikes for about 1/4 mile as it shares a section of trail with the Pacific Crest Trail.

The pictures are from May this year.

That description is of the 3 Peaks Loop or the Figure 8 Loop. You can do any section of the main three rides discribed there to make it a easier ride. We mostly don't do Mooney or Vetter because Hilyer is singletrack and so much fun...we just loop it 2-3 times. Much of Vetter is fireroad and all of Mooney is fireroad.

Ride will probibly be finialized when we get there. I am not Singlespeeding it. The climb out of Cooper Creek back to Buckhorn Station is moderately tech and steep. Last time I walked 3/4 of it on the Singlespeed (maybe a 2 mile walk). The rest of the ride was SS friendly. Remember this ride is 7-8000 ft elevation.

We are meeting Sunday the 20th, 8:30am, the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 210 (La Canada Flintridge area). Take Highway 2 exit (North) off the 210 go up a couple of blocks and park; we will meet at the east side of the road. From there we leave some cars below and car pool the rest of the way, about another 30-40 minute drive.

Eh Dean, Are you guys doing Burkhart Trail & Chilao or just one? What's the Burkhart trail like, mileage? I figure it involves lots of climbing but is there reward at the end?

Depends on how much of the Burkhart we ride and how we feel. The moderate tech part of the trail is in the beginning, when you drop down to Cooper Canyon. Much of the trail is very smooth, that decomposed sandy granite so prevalent in the San Gabriel's. Parking elevation is 6790, Burkhart Saddle Saddle is 6959 with: round trip 10 miles with 2160 feet of climbing in between.

Burkhart starts at Buckhorn Campground and drops 740 feet over 1.4 miles down to Cooper Canyon. It follows the creek and Pacific Crest Trail (hike-a-bike) for .3 miles loosing another 90 feet. After the creek crossing, it gains 1319 feet over the next 3.3 miles to Burkhart Saddle.

Then it is decision time; turn around or continue on, it is a drop of 2259 feet over 3.7 miles to the turn off (High Desert National Recreation Trail)to Devil's Punch Bowl, on a trail I have not been on and would not like to do until winter when the desert is cooler.

Depending where we park it may add a extra 200-300 feet of climbing especially if Buckhorn Campground is closed.

Reward is twice in the middle. With the hardest most tech climb at the end.

Then if that is not enough we can loop Chilao.

Strong intermediate, used to riding at 6,000 ft and above. If we chose to ride to Mt. Waterman it will be 7990 ft. The trail is only rocky and tech in a few places but the climbs are serious. As a out and back you can turn around when tired. If you can climb Mathis you will be OK on this ride.

Sounds like some very serious climbing. Gotta pass on this one Dean.

I'm up for doing just the Chilao loop if anyone wants to go.
