Default Another beat the heat ride Sunday

Los Padres National Forest, Mt. Pinos (8,700 ft), McGill trail Sunday 30th 9am lower parking lot (5,900 ft).

Easy trail, moderate pace, more than a little bit of climbing maybe 3000 feet over about 9 miles.

Offical post at EpicRiders. http://www.ermtb.com/index.php?name=...ic&p=5428#5428

It takes me a little over 2 hours to drive there. That ride usually takes us most of the day. If we blow through the climb and have the right vechicles we shuttle it again. Great trail.

It's not "beat the heat" unless you start much earlier, 7AM. Even then you finish the downhill in the heat.

It's in the Mt. Pinos parking lot that I learned that exploding soda cans is not a myth!

edit: My links to weather for favorite areas (Local and Mt. Pinos) http://www.allsingletrack.com/weather/index.htm

Don't you be raining on my parade. I do not believe that the heat will be a problem. One, it's cooler out there than most surrounding areas and temperatures are projected to be much lower this weekend.

Thank you for the weather link, it says at 5700ft (Pine Mountain) is 64 degrees at 8am. Last ride there about a month ago people were complaining that it was too cold.

Highway 5 up to the Mt. Pinos Recreational Area Sign...after the Highway 138 turnoff. Turn left Frazier Mountain Park and go through Frazier Park. Right turn on Cuddy Valley Road. go to were Mil-Potrero Highway, Cuddy Valley Raod and Mt Pinos Roads come together. Large parking area at the intersection, usually heavy equipmenet parked there.

Hope you can make it.

Well, that depends...

This was the scene at McGill Campground last Friday at 5:30 PM. Temp was 50 degrees, while Woodland Hills was hitting the hundred-teens.

That's 1/2" diameter hail covering the ground.

That's not a trail going through the woods--it's a runoff stream caused by the torrential downpours.

Jim nice picture...thanks. That is why I love to ride at high elevations...you never know weather wise what is in store and things can change very fast. Lesson always have a shell in the Camelback.

D - If I left at 6:30am would that be early enough? 5 Spot or Flux?

I'm weighing my options at this point.

A little rain on the parade would be nice. At the PMC the rain dropped the temp from 90+ to 68.

I talked Bruce into going! So if it's a repeat of our rides in Mammoth there should be some good crashes... =P

It takes me 2hrs 15 minutes from Laguna. I plan on leaving just before 6:30am.

Us South Countyers need to talk about carpooling? Shannon and Craig?

If this was not a group ride I would be bringing the rigid single speed, to see if I could make the climb. McGill is about as clean, as in no rocks trail as I can think of....very few sandy or loose spots last time I was there. On the way down there is a section that has large waterbars that with speed you can get major air. If you are looking for a tech trail, this is not it.

I am taking my heavy my ass (32lbs) 5-Spot but if I had a lite geared bike that would be my weapon of choice.

Matt, if I am thinking about a single speed, you on a 32 x 20 on 29" wheels....no problem.... for someone as strong as you. This is a out and back ride so the fast folks can just hammer in out. Not that steep just not many places to get your legs back, my guess is that you will ride 80% of it in the saddle.

weather.com says high of 75-so it may actually be cold in the morning. We will be climbing a couple thousand feet so cooler on the top too.

Hey Dean. We can carpool if you'd like. However my bike rack can only hold two bikes. We can take the wheels off another bike and throw it in the back too. We'd at the least like to follow you up there. Let me know.
