The weather forecast for tomorrow will reach the mid to upper 80s by early afternoon. Be sure to bring along enough food and water. You may also want to bring insect repellant. Pain Freak's RR from 7/3 mentioned that the bugs weren't too bad, however, you may want to bring repellant anyway.

Oh well. ![]() As to the carpool, Incycle is 25 miles west for me. Y'all are coming through the 909 anyway. CC is out this way, too. What about meeting at the 15 fway where it intersects Baseline? There's a carpool parking lot just west of the fwy on Baseline that would be convenient. Is that a good idea? It is for me! ![]()

Why would the Mills be better? Not trying to be argumentative, just wondering. It's easier to take the 210 west than the 10, isn't it? And, if you want to take the 10, still, we can shoot down the 15 then. It'd be easy for CC and I to meet you guys there. But, if not, we can meet at Mills.

I'm out on this one, but I'll probably show for Sunday as there is another ride heading up there. I'm doing some road riding on Saturday 100+ miles. I just hope I have legs enough for SART after that.

You'll have the legs as we are cheating a little and shuttling a portion of it. Still looking to climd a couple thousand feet though. 8 am at the store, on 38.

We had a great ride today! The descent from the post office was a bit loose in places, but the rest was in great shape. There was some thunder and rain in the afternoon, which actually helped the traction for the ride back. All told, we did about 30 miles. The heat wasn't too bad at all. Here are a few pics:
<edit> I just realized that the guy in my first image wasn't part of our group! Oh well, I'm leaving the image there anyway since I like the way it came out. |

just got home... holy crap i'm beat.. ran out of water by glass rd. and didn't get any water until we were close to the campground ( thanks andrew! ). ended up cramping up, but for some damn reason i wanted to finish the ride out. Very glad i did, the descent from the camp ground to glass rd. was awesome. The rain made the trail nice and tacky, slick in some places but it only added to the fun. I don't remember too much after that since exhaustion was starting to kick in.
i only had a few crashes, but no major damage done. I'll post up pictures in a bit.. I'd like to thank Justin for organizing the event and showing everyone around. It was good meeting all the new guys and the geezers... glen and jose, good riding with ya fellas again. Cathy, you freakin rock! hung with the guys and didn't complain.. you're gonna have to do the entire ride next time ![]()

Nam, Andrew thanks for the report.
Running out of water is a bad thing and will cramp you up real fast. No one had a water filter? That trail has more water sources on it than most we ride.

Ride Report - SART July 8
We had a good turn out, 11 people showed up; Clay, Mark, Jose, Glen, Cathy, Andrew, Nam, Thom, Antonio, Sergio and myself. Clay showed up the earliest...waay before 6:30 and just drove around in circles trying to find the turnout. Mark rolled in a little later after making the climb up the old Highway 38. Jose, Glen, Cathy, Andrew and Nam followed soon after. Thom, Antonio and Sergio were the last ones to show up. All these people, yet not a single Turner in the crowd. We made our way to the post office and started down the single track. There was some 'construction' work occuring along side the trail for the first quarter mile, but after that, the trail was in perfect shape. There weren't any 'acorn' things covering the trail, so it was the usual compact sand (with the occasional loose spots) condition you've come to expect on SART. In addition to the good trail conditions, the weather was very cooperative. The temperature in the morning was probably in the mid 70's. The ride was without incident....until the passed Glass Road. Cathy's bike and a rock on the trail colluded and attacked her knee. Luckily, Dr. Glen patched her up and we were on our way again. We finally arrived at Southfork Campground a little past 11 am. The group was pretty exhausted. Gone was the enthusiasm we had at the beginning of the ride. It was replaced with thoughts of "I'd better not take the single track back, otherwise I might fly off the trail." After refilling on water and an extended break, we headed back. Mark was on a time schedule and headed back early. Glen, Cathy and Antonio decided to ride back to the cars via Highway 38. Everyone else took to the single track back. As we started back onto the singletrack, it started to rain. And it continued to rain all the way back to Glass Road. So, the guys riding on Sunday, be aware that there is a flash flood advisory for the area. So scattered rain may occur on your ride, just like ours. It wasn't a heavy down pour, in fact, you hardly felt it. You got more drenched by brushing past the nearby shrubs. The rain also made it a bit more difficult going over rocks. Not only were they obscured by the tall grass, but if you hit one at the wrong angle you might deflected off the trail. Regardless of the additional hazards, that section was pretty damn fun. When we reached Glass Road, we entertained thoughts of climbing out via Glass Road to Highway 38. But another biker, who was parked at the intersection mentioned that the climb out involved about 4 miles of paved road just to get to Highway 38. So we opted to continue on the singletrack until we hit Middle Control Road. Once we hit Middle Control, no one wanted to take the single track back up to the post office....I guess no one was stupid enough to do that. After a 2-3 mile spin up the fire road we were back to our cars. Next time we do this trail, hopefully everyone will be able to take the singletrack back. Good ride everyone, thanks for showing up! By the way, there was plenty of poisen oak on the trail, so you may want to use Technu, or something similiar. |

One would not think that the SART would wear you out like it does. The ups and downs take a toll after awhile. When you leave a car up on Highway 38 your bailout options are not that good.
When I ride alone out there I normaly leave my truck down on Seven Oaks Road at the bridge over the Santa Ana River and start the singletrack at Pinezanita. That way it is all downhill or level to bail out.
