Man I'm beat after that ride!
Ride up Harding wasn't too bad. Warm but not too toasty. Perfect when you hit the shade. LOTS of flies up near the top (AND on Main Divide, AND down Joplin), though. In fact, I think the flies were the biggest annoyance. It was my first time down Joplin. This trail is gnarly and doesn't mess around! "Loose" doesn't even come close to describing that sucker! Unlike the "loose" of Trabuco, Joplin is super loose AND soft, which for me, made it much more challenging. Rocks galore! Same with "overgrown". Real narrow trail, hard to see what is coming up--and for good measure, a high abundance of poison oak. Overall a scenic and beautiful trail though! Did I mention the flies? Low on water and pestered by flies, so aldo and I didn't mess around at old camp. Felt the heat the most coming back on STT. Hot and parched. My > 1 gallon of liquid just wasn't enough for this ride... STT felt looooooooong. Glad I finally rode both these trails! Enjoyed the different perspective of the mountains on this route. Those hidden mountain streams on Joplin were worth the price of admission alone. Inhaled a burrito at Wahoo's post-ride... In the end, a hair under 6 hours and 25 miles. Get an early start and bring lots o'water tommorow matt! Great ride aldo! ![]()

Thanks!
We were wondering about Maple Springs today...is it still open? We were kicking around the idea of MS -> Motorway. Quote:

i may be driving to the peak on sunday.
![]() good to hear that you guys did the ride lance! after riding del cerro, trabuco seems like nothing in the "loose" scheme of things. joplin is a bitchin' s/t and i wanted to see some pix of you guys negotiating the sharp/steep/loose left hand turn...i know you guys both cleaned it right. ![]() glad to hear there wasn't any serious issues on the ride and you guys enjoyed it!!! here is a shot of me on the lower area negotiating a rocky/rooty switchback, with the stream behind rob (the photographer). |

Like said Maple was way buggy. Don't recall too much of and issue on Main divide but got hot. No compaints on Motorway but seemed a bit more loose as comped to times i have hit it before (I may be wrong however). if you hit it enjoy

EcoDork covered it all... Did he mention the flyes, knats, etc... Man, were they annoying. Luckily they didn't start until 3/4 of the way up harding. But after that, I swallowed 1/2 dozen and got a couple in my eye... Oh, found a tick when I got home.
As mentioned climb up Harding wasn't bad, shade at that elevation is muy bueno. Joplin wasn't that hot until we got to the lower section (i.e. closer to old camp). But is very, very over-grown, tons of poison oak (oh, my leg and arm warmers, used to combat contact w/PO, didn't help out with the heat). Trail also home to tons of flys, knats, etc. We really felt the heat upon arriving @old camp, and it got worse when we climbed out and arrived @the clearing. The slight breeze felt like a hot blow-dryer to the face. At that point we were baked and low on water. Old camp never felt soooo looong.... The Luge was fun and shady. Lance ran out of water upon reaching it, my supply was depleted by the time I reached the bottom. Air conditioning & cold beer @Wahoo's was a savior. |
