Default Santa Ana River Trail - July 1

*** UPDATE 6/26 ***

Ride is still on. I just checked the weather report and the temperature forecast is the mid 80s. No big deal....we'll just start at 7:00 am. If you haven't been there before and need directions, see the following google map link http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=34.1508n,116.9756w+(SART+Parking+ lot)&ie=UTF8&ll=34.149797,-116.977036&spn=0.003978,0.010815&t=h&om=1

By the way, you'll need to bring a Forest pass.

*****************

Anyone up for a ride at SART? We'll start at the post office and go all the way to Southfork Camp ground. Once we get there, we can fill up on water (because the camp ground is now open) and head back. We'll skip the fire road and just climb out via singletrack back to the post office.

For a more detailed description refer to http://mountainbikebill.com/SART.htm.

The start time will probably be around 8, but that can be adjusted.

Approximate miles? elevation gain? Leaving late Sat or possibly early Sun morning for the holiday, but earlier might work for me.

There are so many ways to do the SART that it is a hard to answer that question. Post Office to South Fork and back is 26+ miles and 3,000+ feet of up and downs. Even though there is some tree shade, It can get hot out there.

When I take new people out there, I park at the bottom of Middle Control Road by the river, cuts down on much of the climbing but you miss one of the best sections of the SART...the Post Office to Middle Control Road.

If it is not too hot out, I might be game.

Just as dstepper was saying, it'll be about 26 miles out-and-back with 3000' feet of climbing. But, the climb is gradual, so you don't really feel it. There are a few sketchy parts, but the majority of the trail is 'smooth'. The only significant climb would be the last few miles out. An earlier start time (ie. 7 am) or cutting the ride short is definately possible. If the start time is 7 am and the pace is easy/moderate you can do the entire ride (post office to southfork) and finish by early to mid afternoon.

I'll have to make sure we don't already have plans for the July 1, but it certainly sounds intriguing!

You are not going to try to climb the singletrack up to the postoffice after 21 miles of riding are you? Have you ever tried it? Really steep and very loose in spots. A fun way to do this ride is park at the bottom, climb up to the s/t behind the p/o then bomb out and back .

Yup, we're going to try to do that. But if we're too tired, we'll just take the fire road back out. The last time I went up the single track, it was loose (and steep) in only a few spots, but mostly rideable.
