Thumbs up Mt Baldy is open for bikes...

Hey,

I just called the office at Mt Baldy & they said they were open for bikes to use the chair lifts & fireroads/ singletrack. It's $25 per day & they are open weekends & holidays 8am - 5pm.

Anyone up for heading up there anytime soon?

Adam

I ski Baldy a lot and from looking at the terrain, there's a lot of shale rock. Most of it is loose and sharp. As a ski resort, Baldy has the best terrain if you like challenging runs. Not a good place for beginners.

It used to be open for racing a loooooooong time ago, and it was like riding on marbles for the entire course. But it's still a fun place to ride.

I'm up for a trip to check it out.

I'd be down to check it out, it would suck if it was a surf fest through shale though.

You are suppesed to only ride the fire roads, but they're supposed to get more going. Last year I was up there volunteering some time to try to get more opened up, but the owner was terrified of the forest service, and there were pirate trails everywhere. I hope it takes off, but I am not sure if too much damage has already been done (by the illegal trails). I will definitely go up and check it out again though!

I work at Baldy on Ski Patrol and the ticket office. I just talked to the owner, my boss. The fire roads are the only thing open to ride. You can ride toliet bowl, mullins mile they are considered fire roads. Just ask the people working the ticket office or Chair one. The ticket office number is 909-982-0800. Just ask for Bruce or Jane. Nick usually runs the chairs he would know too.

Have fun, wear your pads, and don't bring beginners.

Okay are the fireroads worth the trip up plus 25 smackers??? I really can't see people paying to ride fireroads.

I like the climb up from Maniker Flats.

I am getting close to doing: Maniker Flats, Baldy Notch, Devils Backbone to the top of Mt San Antonio, ride.

That dirtbag MTBMaven went without me last fall.

Pretty straight forward, park at Maniker Flats, climb the fireroad past San Antonio Falls, up to Baldy Notch over to Devils Backbone Trail and up to the top of 10,000 + ft high Baldy. I have biked up to Thunder Mountain (8,500 ft), but never gone up Devil's Backbone up to the top of Baldy...MTBMaven has. I am sure that there is a fair amount of hike-a-bike getting to the top of Baldy...maybe Brian can clarify. The interesting part is coming down. There is a singletrack trail (some call it Village Trail, Bear Canyon Trail and Mt. Baldy Trail, anyway the original route up) it comes off the top of Badly down to Baldy Village. It is right on the border of the Wilderness area and no one seems to know if it is bike legal or not. I asked the Forerst Service about bike legal of the trail and their reply is "why would you what do that! Most people climb Baldy up from San Antonio Falls...shorter and not as steep or use the chair-lift".

I first sugested this ride last fall as a out and back. We planned it then the weather came in and changed things. A couple of weeks later, MBTMaven and his friend did the loop...said it was outstanding. Maybe he can post some pictures and better review.

Note: The pavement between Badly Village and Maniker Flats is better to shuttle.

Partial review of ride...Ron Bigelow: http://www.ronbigelow.com/Outings/Tr...aldy/baldy.htm

Do they build any drops or jumps to play on? Hard to see paying $$ to ride a fireroad.

Did anyone ride at Waterman when they tried to get something going around 5 years ago? It was super steep, super loose fireroad but they built in some stuff along the way.

It never really took off. They tried to hold a DH event once and about 10 of us showed up. DOH!

Now the boardercross course down the road from Waterman was some fun. Short, but fun!
