Default San Gabes Alert for 9/13

This shouldn't affect anyone w/ rides tomorrow morning but if you're planning an all day Gabes ride, the Angeles Crest 100 (AC100) Endurance Race starting in Wrightwood will be utilizing many of the trails on the front side of the San Gabes down from Mt Hilyar all the way to Pasadena. Check the course description at http://www.ac100.com/

Mott, Tedroy and I shared the trail (last year) with the AC100 competitors.

All I can say is: if you (especially my DH buddies) are riding in the area , PLEASE show extreme caution.

1) The race officials are not too keen on mountain bikers. Long story!

2) There are many twists and blind turns where one could unexpectedly cross paths with a competitor

3) Many of the competitors are RUINED. They may be laying down (or sitting) in the middle of the trail. Last year, I gave my water to a competitor who was pretty much SCREWED from exhaustion.
It would't surprise me one bit if they airlifted that guy out!

4) Racers running down the hill... Hikers walking up the hill.... Mountain bikers RACING down the hill. Not a good combination!

Again, PLEASE show extreme caution- At least for one day!

We ran into a handful of these guys today on Sunset and El Prieto.

A couple of them were pacing their buddies for 25 miles or so. Apparently they started YESTERDAY morning at 5am, and when we saw them today at around 11am-1pm, they still had 10 miles or so to go. We took the same exact route back to our cars as they did, so we kept playing leapfrog with the same dudes all the way down El Prieto. On the Millard connector to El Prieto I rode along a guy doing it by himself for the first time. He said he'd never do it again, but appeared to be in good shape. I asked him how he trained, he said he does marathons on the weekends.

Some other guy was sort of offended when I asked him if they sleep through the night. Apparently not.

We saw one guy who was hurtin pretty bad but he had a couple buddies with him. I think he was cramping or his hip was hurting.

Imagine running and seeing the sun rise twice.

That I couldn't imagine, but I have seen the sun rise twice on a road bike ride (45 hours).

We were on the Devore trail during the Mt. Disappointment 50 mile run. The runners were pretty friendly and we had the same experience, leapfrogging several of them on the climb back up to Mt. Wilson.

One thing we should acknowledge is that the AC100 crew do volunteer trailwork on the trails on their course throughout the year. They are many of the same trails we ride and on which CORBA and other groups also work. Everyone wins.

And kudos to those who finish, or even start this sufferfest!

Wow, All along I thought this was a Mountain Bike race. Are those trail accessable to bikes? I mean can us bikers take the same trail from Wrightwood to JPL?

You can legally ride a lot of the same trails. However portions of the race are run on the PCT which MTB's are not supposed to be on.

May I ask, where the trail starts? I have yet to venture in the front range of GOTHAM CITY. I currently ride the SW Riverside area and East OC.
