The moderators can chose to make this a new thread if they feel it has gotten out of control.

The ride itself is explained on three different websites.

http://www.mountainbikebill.com/CannellPlunge.htm
http://arnica.csustan.edu/mtbike/
http://ogrehut.net/index.php?s=cannel

Those of us that have chosen to use the shuttle service http://www.mtnriver.com/ are leaving Kernville at 8:30 AM on Sunday June 25th. I am not sure how long it takes to get to Sherman Pass.

Some of us have rented cabins at http://www.sierragatewaycottages.com/ on Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th. I have a full cabin with my friend Simon, he is bringing his wife and four kids. I am in cabin #4, Mike (Pain Freak ) is in cabin #2, that will be headquarters to arrainge Saturdays rides.

Saturday will have rides, not sure were. My friend Simon is bringing his boat so no riding for him. There are shorter shuttle rides available, water skiing in the lake and tons of places to explore....in other words you are on your own to entertain your self on Saturday.. My goal is to ride in Kennedy Meadows on Saturday.

I have not been on this ride or been in Kernville before....so I am flying blind. Yes, I could have spent a grip of money reserving vans and campsites in my name but I have no idea how many people are coming, some of the people that expressed interest, I do not even know. Some of the people that express interest will not come.

I am sorry if this is not easy to follow, this chat format is limited for arraigning this. I could spend I grip of money setting up a website to make it easy; reserve vans and camping sites in my name...this is not a bussiness, nor am I a tour company...just a mountain biker trying to enjoy a ride.

If you have specific un-answered questions call me @ 714-747-2189 cell, I will see if I can help you.

As I recall, the ride up to Sherman Pass from MRA's campground takes roughly 1 hour. The last 7 or so miles are on a fireroad, that's why it takes so long.

Default info

It looks like you guys may need some info about Cannell and Kernville. I will try to help if I can.
The shuttle from Kernville to Sherman Pass is about an hour and a half since you will be riding in a full van. There is no fire road on the shuttle. Sprockethead, you must have done the shuttle up to Big Meadow. If that is the case then you only did part of the ride. You should enjoy the upper part.
dstepper, if you ride in the Kennedy Meadows area on Saturday you will drive over this same pass and down the other side a ways. This is a beautiful area with miles of great trails. There is potential for big loops and point to point rides. That being said I wouldn't recommend riding in that area on a Saturday. It is a very well known motorcycle area. All of the trails are motorcycle leagal and the are going to be several hundred riders camping and riding in the area. Some of the higher trails will still be closed because they are too wet. This will concentrate all the riders into a smaller area. The best time to ride a mountain bike up there is on a week day or on a weekend in the fall.
I know that I will be doing a ride with Mike and whoever else wants to go with us on Saturday. We will do something cool but not so populated. There are many options around . If you are looking for something specific just let me know and I can try and make some suggestions.
Ladd jasper, I'm sure you know this already but just in case you don't Quaking Aspen is about an hour and 15 minutes from Kernville. Your drive the Sherman Pass from there should be almost the same as our drive from Kernville. Coming from there makes your shuttle a little more complicated but you sound like you have that all figured out.
If you guys have any more questions about the ride or the area just let me know and I will do the best I can. I look forward to riding with you.

The post above is from a friend of mine that lives out there and he knows the trail system better then anyone I know. He also rides dirt bikes so he knows what would be best for us to ride. I trust him with suggestions on what to ride for Saturday. Hey Kipster, I still have two floor spaces available for 40 bucks each.

My previous post came off a bit more gruff than I'd intended, and wasn't directed at anyone in particular.

As the Von Skipster mentioned, thanks for taking the lead on this, guys. Ain't easy, obviously.

I also appreciate the response, Dean, that's exactly what I was looking for. Seems I'm the only one bitching, so it'll be just fine where it is.

jfsh, thanks for the inside info. To expand on my plans, I'll be camping with the wife that weekend, and will have her drop me at the top. She'll then take off w/ the dogs for a day hike somewhere. Speaking of, any recommendations in the 4-6 hour range?

If all goes according to plan--and I feel fairly confident it won't--we'll meet back up at the bottom around the same time. Think we'll both bring a book just in case.

Hey Jeff, it's ET, I can't make this date, but I know some other people that want to do the plunge some other weekend.

Is mid-June too soon? I hear the middle gate before the top of the pass might be open (is it to Horse Meadow campground?)

Or mid July; I think the 4'th weekend would be too busy for me up there.
The first week of August I'll be going back to Humboldt, so mid-late August would be OK also...

What's a good date for you?

Got my shuttle ticket today too.

There are 2 more spots left for this shuttle. Once this one is filled they need a minimum of 4 to start another shuttle.

From Jfsh, here's some local camping info:

The campground reservation number is 1-877-444-6777. You can also make reservations at ReserveUSA.com. The three campgrounds that are the closest to Kernville are "Headquarters"
, "Camp 3". and "Hospital Flat" in that order. The flyer says that some sites can be reserved and they keep some for use on a first come first served basis. I hope this helps

Made reservations yesterday. We'll be camping at Redwood Meadow up on 107, and I'll be dropped by the wife at the trailhead.

Anyone know when the MRA shuttle will be at the top, approximately?
