Hey, previous Plungers: How long of a ride is this, time wise? Lots of variables, I know, but an average of past trips maybe? Thanks.

4-6 hours not counting shuttle.

I am bring my 5-Spot...a X-County or Trail Bike would be good. Whatever bike you bring the most important thing is that it is in good condition....way bad place to have mech problems. There is 2,000ft of climbing and posible hike-a-bike sections for some. I am sure someone would tell you to bring a downhill bike to bomb the plunge...whatever you are comfortable on.

The links on my first post include good trail reports.

The thing that slowed most of us last year was the elevation. Most of the climbing is at 8-10k. But is well worth it in the end. There are some other campgrounds I know of near Johnsondale which are upriver a ways and higher elavation (cooler temps). It would make getting to MRA for the shuttle harder though.

Scott,
I'll talk to you when you get back from Moab. My boss shot down my vacation request. Seems I need to give more then a 4 day notice even if I do have 12 weeks coming.

Franky, as Dean posted Scott's already in on this and about four others from Epic Riders along with about 5 others from last year. We are close approaching 20, maybe more. I'll try to get a hold of Jeff (local) wo has a trailer and helped us out last year.

dstepper

Mike, Scott,
6 confirmed from from GhostRiders.
Frodo, Jimmi, Martin, Mighty, Mike and I.
(maybe Robster, Lazeer, Rob & Barry too).

I'll see if either Jimmi or Frodo will use their trucks Scott's style
also have access to 2 hitch mounted racks that hold 6 bikes in all.
Jeff (local) sure was a good thing

Yes Sunday June 25th.....Read post #37 and #42 to get a basic idea what is going on.

I had to move on the MRA van before we lost that resource. Mountain River Adventure info is on post #37. I have reserved the van under my name (Dean Stepper) and/or So-Cal Trailriders. Today 4 of 12 seats (Scott, Mike, Matt. K and I) are booked...they can add another van if they get enough lead time.......or figure out your own shuttle, any help would be appreciated.

You will need to call MRA and reserve your own shuttle seat ($30). Maybe someone will step-up and bring a trailer to haul bikes...I do not know.

We still need camping...Help...if you know that area give Mike (Pain Freak) some ideas. This is peak season and things are tight for camping and lodging.

Man, this ride looks awesome. I'd really like to go, too. What's the status on all of this? I read the whole thread and it sounds like it's every biker for him(her)self. Is that the case? What's going on now?

Yes you will need to call Mountain River Adventures and reserve a shuttle seat for Sunday June 25th @ 8am. The camping is not settled , much of the camping is first come first serve, maybe someone can go up early and stake out a place for us.

For the most part Gurp, anybody can do this ride. There is some hard climbing at the top in altitude, but I've seen people with only a year of so riding do it with no problem.

If you want to go, just call MRA and reserve a seat. This makes it easier on everyone. If we had one person paying for it , there would be some no shows and the person who's name is it in would get stuck paying for it. It could get expensive real quick at 30 bucks a head.

I would think so, but like I said I do not know the area well. I would think the sooner we get there the closer to Kernville we will find camping.

I haven't looked much into it, but Quaking Aspen Group Campground might be a viable option. It's "up the hill," but still relatively close to MRA. If accessability to the shuttle is the idea, this works. Can accomodate lots of vehicles/ riders, and is a good jumping off spot for other rides in the area. Morning of the shuttle, could pack camp and head down the hill for the shuttle. Most recent inquiry showed availability for the weekend in question.

There are definitely more convenient options. But available at this point? Not so likely.

I've got no problem with the reservation. Are they selling out quickly? If I could wait until the 1st it would be great.

Are people carpooling, then? I don't want to drive alone. Also, what are the plans in terms of leaving and coming back. I have to work Monday morning. I could probably leave Friday afternoon, though. Summer school starts on the 26th so I have an in-service day that Friday, I think. But, I bet I could talk my principal into letting me go early if my carpool was leaving early.

By June I will have been riding 10 months. As far as climbing, I think I can handle it. I might have to go a little slower than some, but I can hang. I rode 28 miles in the Poker ride last weekend. Also rode yesterday on the fireroad next to I-15 from Lytle Creek road on the Fontana side over to the Lytle Creek side. The climbing, which I used to find difficult, didn't even phase me. Including road miles, I rode 17 miles yesterday. So, my strength is increasing. I looked at that video. None of what they showed looked too technical for me. Hell, Southridge has some worse stuff than that!

Here is what I did for lodging: I rented a house in Kernville for Friday 23rd and Saturday the 24th. Two bedroom with 3 double beds, can add two more rollout beds costs (another $20 per rollout) $175 a night, full kicthen and has barbeque. In is in town and across from the new Kernville Brewery (yet to open, but will be open by 6/24). This will help give us a headquarters to help organize those that camp and people that drive in for the day. It is walking distance to the shuttle.

Valerie at
Sierra Gateway Cottages, I rented Cottage #4
800-888-8194
Sierra Way
Kernville, CA

They have a number of smaller cottages still available.

Later...I am off to Big Bear to find some sun...sun has been gone in Laguna for weeks.

Great this looks like it's starting to come together. Might reserve another cottage. Good work there Dean. Also Quaking Aspen is a good back up. I was thinking of possibly going up early and riding there.
