i have a feeling the 29er would be a tad underbiked for mammoth...

but on a similar note, how would my reign X fare on the stuff you guys will be riding? I can be a crazy mofo if i have to

A 29er HT would be pure pain on the Mammoth trails. If you had the mad skills to pull it off, the 29er wheels would still probaly be taco'd before the end of the day. Mammoth is a great place to abuse one's bike.

You can get away with having a 6" all-mtn bike if you are really skilled rider. A big DH bike is ideal though. Even on 8.8" of travel there's some stuff there that still kicks my ass.

Bryguy, I believe you said you were putting a Marz 66 on your Reign X. At your skill level, I think you could pull it off, fairly easily. I saw a handful of Reign X's out there on the harder trails and they weren't complaining. A true DH bike is ideal but the Reign X is very capable.

To give you a visual of what just some of the harder terrain features look like, check out this dude's youtube vid. NOT MY VID.

Awesome riding with you guys too. I gotta give BigRedHit and his buddy kudos for having the huevos to hit that huge rock drop on Techno Rock. That was bonafide baddass right there. Please tell me you guys are gonna post the vids and pictures in a ride review thread.

i was there 2weeks ago with an INTENSE 6.6 and it held up fine on flow, shotgun, bullet. I had to skip the Ladder drop at flow since I wasnt too sure how my bike will hold up. Ill be back there on Sept. 19 but this time I'll bring a bigger gun

Sounds like fun, last year in the snow was excellent. I will work it into my next Roadtrip.

It wasn't that long ago that people were saying you need a bike with at least 3" of travel to ride Mammoth. And some of these trails were being rode on HT's.

From stinkyrider's vid there, everything looks doable on a hardtail, but personally, I've had my fill of DH hardtailnig for the time being. not nearly as much fun, and you're SO beat up at the end of the day.

Also, checking out that vid, it looks SICK! The first rock garden that's shown is pretty chunky, but nothing is impossible with some balls and armor

I'll definitely try and make it. I just finished building up the reign and it just wants to go down. fast. Just need to work a little on dialing in the suspension and it'll be golden methinks. that thing pedals better than my trek, and it has 2.5" more travel and a coil shock. it's stupid.

Looks like we have another maestro believer!
Dude, I'm in love with the Glory. That suspension linkage is sick. The tracking and plushness is just incredible.

Post some pics up of the final build. I wanna check it out.

Why yes, yes we do. I'm going to reserve judgment for when i can get a good trail under it, but initial testing is positive. i can take up to 4" curbs without feeling anything, and sprinting down the street yields little bob unless I'm intentionally unsmooth with pedaling. Plus, according to my bathroom scale, it only weighs about 36 lbs. not bad, considering the saint cranks, heavy wheels, and a 2ply blue groove up front

The fork needs a bit of tuning, but I think I'm gonna get it rebuilt at garageworks (it's an '06 and a little leaky at times). still needa play with the boost valve etc on the DHX, and possibly a lighter spring.

pics will come tomorrow. I need daylight to take any.

so, do we have any updates on cheap available lodging, as well as carpools for the trip? I'm trying to figure out how much this is going to end up costing so i can work accordingly.

I'm also assuming we'd be doing the 2-day package? drive up friday, ride sat/sun, drive home monday? or similar
