I was actually thinking about heading to Aliso Woods this weekend...I'd love to join the ride, but the general opinion seems to be that this isn't too great for a beginner.

Seeing as how I haven't even touched the trails with my new bike as of yet, what do you guys think?

I think I could manage the climbs, but the total distance has me a bit concerned. Its a bit on the long side for someone who is completely new. The most I've done in a single stretch is maybe 3 miles or so, but that was on flat, paved roads....so I dont know what that represents really.

So throw out some opinions if you have some. If you guys can convince me that I wouldn't slow the group down, I'm definitely in.

Realistically there is going to be a lot of climbing, but the pace will be slow and if you have to walk a little that is fine. The DH sections are really fun. If you get out there and it's more than what you thought you could stop before the second loop(climb).

Steve, I think you forget that you were a runner and in good shape before you started biking. I have taken a number of beginners to Woods Canyon and they could not even climb the canyon bottom to Cholla. Getting from Aliso Creek to Cholla was a big feat for most of them.

One of my first ride in Aliso my "friends" that showed me how to ride, told me Rockit was not much more than a beginners trail. I fell a dozen times that day, damn clipless pedals, and nearly stopped riding.

After thinking about the trails I picked, I decided to shorten the ride and take out some of the technical trails. This will now be more Beginner friendly. I edited my first post, but here are the changes. we will now be starting at the main Aliso trailhead by the church. We will only climb Cholla and come down Rock-it. I also pushed back the start time to 9, that way it is easier to get up in the morning. Ride time should be less than 2 hours at a slow pace.

Hopefully this will encourage more novice riders to join me.

Steve

The actual work is not very time consuming at all. Its just a matter of when they actually start working on it.
When did you drop it off?

Call and tell them you need it for Sunday. Tell em that you've got a 6 pack with their name on it.

Bribes with alcohol always work.
Preferably with something better then Bud or Coors, maybe some Bass or Newcastle

i have ridden aliso a few times with a buddy and wouldn't mind doing it with others if thats okay. i have almost cleaned Cholla and haven't gone down Rockit yet so it sounds right up my alley especially if it isn't going to be a fast ride.

Ordinarily, I'd be down for this. But, I'm hangin' with the kids after 10am. I'm gonna try to get in a very early (7am) ride at Southridge instead. Another time.

You should come out, it'll be fun. I'm looking forward to meeting some new people. And yes this does mean I've decided to do this instead of gravity day

I have to taper my work outs before my tri and take it easy. This might be a good ride for me. Woohoo...something that's not road or the Fully Loop. Count me in...maybe.
