Default Saturday 04-29 Joplin ride

Saturday 04-29 @ 8 (start time)

Where
:

Whiting --> Harding --> Joplin --> Old Camp --> Luge --> Whiting
 • This route is about 30 miles but the most enjoyable, because you get to ride all the fun stuff Whiting has to offer
 • No shuttle needed
 • Followed by some burritos and brews at Wahoo's
Who: Anyone able to ride 30.7 miles and confident with their downhill skills

I vote #3, as long as I can get my bike built in time!

Pakiha, you may want to think twice about this ride. It is a grinder and if you haven't been riding that much at all I wouldn't recommend it. The lower half of Whiting isn't that tough, the climb up Mustard will get your lungs burning, that is for sure. Once you go out the back of Whiting you will then have to climb for about a 1/2 mile up a fairly steep paved road, the Modjeska Grade, you'll then go down the other side of that and probably ride another 2 or 3 miles before hitting the Harding trail head. Harding is about 95% uphill, then from 4 Corners it is another mile or so (I think of more climbing), then you hit Joplin, this is a very technical s/t that requires your descending skills to be sharply honed. There are a few areas on that s/t where you could get injured if you aren't 100% focused on the way down. Then you have to climb out of Old Camp and head down towards the Luge, with a couple minor climbing sections before hitting the Luge. Once you hit the Luge chances are you'll be pretty fatigued and again, the Luge is a s/t that requires pretty good descending skills...like Joplin, there are a few areas where serious injury could occur if one is not on his or her toes. Then, you have one more short climb out of the Luge before heading down to Cooks where you then have about 1.5 miles of a paved climb before heading back into Whiting for more s/t lovin'. The initial s/t on the backside of Whiting is pretty rutted and could be tricky especially if you are fatigued from the earlier portions of the ride.

Anyhow, if you think you are up to it, go for it, but I would definitely think hard about doing this ride.

You make it all sound so easy DINO. The down side I know I can handle but admit ably my lung aren't 100%. My last ride Saturday has me screaming for more. It's fun riding with new friends by I need to be challenged again. Of the two rides I've been on with anyone from this gang I can only remember the Fullerton Loop, and it is getting repetitive.

The #2 option is a hard enough ride in itself with a good 10 + miles of climbing.....then adding in Whiting in which the 1st part is basically all uphill will certainly challenge most all riders. If you aren't in very good shape I wouldn't attempt ride #3, but that's just my opinion

I have a better idea.

4. Bedford --> Joplin --> Old Camp --> Harding --> Bedford
 • 43 miles & 8700 feet of climbing
 • selfish reason - I live 1.25 miles from Bedford

To far for me I would have to drive way too much.

If I could ride Saturday I would vote for #1 but I'll be doing the moto thing with La Familia.

For the newer riders or those that are not competent climbers, I will echo Rob and Hucklehoff's comments - you should think twice about this ride.

I'm trying to set up another ride for just that reason, so any second guessers, hit up the Relaxed Ride!
