Default Strawberry Peak - JPL

Has anyone done this route? Geo says its 24 miles and change, with a -6900ft descent. Take a look, let me know what you think.

Two of us are thinking about doing it this weekend. Any opinions on the trail?

Is anyone interested in trying it out, especially maybe someone that has ridden it before, haha?

Cool, i have a tel for a shuttle service. He needs at least 10 people to go for sure. earlier the better it gets HOT at strawberry peak. I know the strawberry peak ride portion from memory, i rode it a month ago (ive been there twice). I also got directions just in case.

For the 2nd portion- I know the redbox to jpl portion really well, as well an alternative ride down which is Mt Lowe to sunset to el prieto to jpl.

I just dont want to park up there since i had an auto break in yesterday at Mt Lowe.

It's more like 29 miles with my calculation (Strawberry Peak=14 miles & Red Box to JPL=15 miles) and if you're doing Strawberry Peak the conventional way (clockwise), you also have 3700 feet of climbing right there. I didn't look at the route with the link you provided. I'm just throwing that out there, in case someone is expecting all downhill. From Red Box to JPL, it's almost 15 miles and 500-600 feet of climbing but don't let that fool you, it will beat you up. Either way, it's a great ride. Pack lots of water and bring spare tubes and chain links.

Good luck and have fun!

Per my GPS. Clear Creek, up Josphine, over to Red Box, all the way down to JPL.

24.47 miles
2872 up
5395 down

Water at Clear Creek Ranger Station, Red Box and Switzers. Filter water at Strawberry Springs and the arroyo...plenty of water out there.

I could be up for this ride. I've ridden it before and it's one of my favorites.
Which day this weekend?
Saturday or Sunday?

Hmm, not doubting you and I have no reference in the way of an altimeter. I use geoladders.com as a reference point and it tallies S. Peak at 3700 feet alone. On my bike computer, which I realize isn't a perfect science, I calculated total miles right about 17.5 miles. Starting and and ending @ Switzers.
Did the Gab last week and again, I used my bike computer and from Red Box to JPL, I logged 14.75 miles. When incorporating both rides, you minus 4.5 miles from Red Box to Switzer, I realize that but I still come up with 28-29 miles. What gives; am I missing something here?

When I used to use a bike computer it always read more miles than the GPS. The bike computer is more accurate at logging miles pedaled in steep terrain than a GPS. The accumulative elevation readings on my GPS never matches the elevation profile when I download the tracklog into my Topo mapping software, although they are pretty close. What is the truth, probably somewhere in between the two.

Good to see some interest, I'll be putting the ride up on the calendar - we have to figure out the driving/shuttle situation, so far im looking at the following people maybe going:

myself +1
eruizela
trojaninsomniac
epicriderat
joetruth
dstepper

Which day works better for everyone, I'm thinking Saturday morning maybe around 7:00am. We want to start early to avoid as much of that midday sun as possible.

Yeah I want to avoid parking at the top as well, what is your contact's price for 10 people with bikes?

LOL! Now that's funny. You couldn't pay Dean enough to go down the Gab right now. It's so polluted with miles of Poison Oak, the thought of it alone is causing him to have break outs and skin irritation.

As for me, sorry, I can't make it but thanks for the consideration. I have an all day ride on Sunday that I need to stay some what fresh for.
