But you miss the Redbox Switzers descent section of the Gab, so there is a trade-off. You can climb the road for 1.5 miles and drop in right above the waterfall section on the gab though.

Just throwing out ideas. I'm happy to ride whatever.
I'm not versed enough in the san gabes to understand what you're proposing - but one of the reasons I like the route as is because most of the climb is up front. So you get a good climb in and then some nice downhills.

Not that simple: Gabs = ups and downs. There are three major climbs on just the Strawberry Part of the Loop. I would use Kanga (Steve) as a guide, no-one knows the Gabs like Steve and Hans.

Just to let you know if you are not doing el "p" the fire road is posted as closed 1 mile from JPL parkinglot due to bridge being out. I was up there yesterday there were several rangers around.

that bridge has been down for a while, i just take the little trail that goes around the bridge. El Prieto would be good if we climbed the burton trail from oakwilde camp.

So is the plan to shuttle to clear creek and climb Josephine? (much more climbing, but descending redbox-switzers on the gab is fast and fun)

Or shuttle to Redbox and descend Colby and the Gab? (less climbing with a more technical descent on colby)

Either way is fine with me... it's been a while since I've done strawberry clockwise. If you don't know Colby Canyon there's a vid on this thread: RR: 2008-03-22 - Strawberry Peak Backwards..(vid and pics)

Anyone carrying radios?

Go with Steve's (Kanga's) suggestion of starting @ Red Box and climbing up to Colby towards Strawberry Peak. Like he said, you'll miss the upper portion of the Gab but you'll get Colby, which technically speaking, will give you lots of bang for the buck! Once out on Hwy. 2 from Colby, you can climb the short bit on pavement to the gate on the right and enter The Gab, just above the waterfall.

Climbing up Joshephine FR and then out of the Canyon towards Strawberry Peak is going to wear down some riders who are not used to climbing that much on exposed single track. Listen to Steve, he knows the San Gabes.

I'm up for whatever, I've never done any of these route's - so you're speaking gibberish to me, do you have a map we can look at? Are you talking about starting on Redbox where you'd start for Mt. Lowe, and then heading northwest towards the gab? I didn't even know a trail headed that direction...is that Colby that follows Mt. Disappointment?

I like the 2nd option, i did check out colby and it was pretty cool. Im up to whatever the group wants to do.

"So is the plan to shuttle to clear creek and climb Josephine? (much more climbing, but descending redbox-switzers on the gab is fast and fun)" So this is much more climbing than doing strawberry starting at the ranger station and ending at redbox? In doing the affoermentioned, is the downhill portion pretty good?

It's less vertical feet and miles. Exactly how much, I'm not sure. If I were to guess, I'd say by 1200-1500 feet less climbing and 4-5 miles less.

UPDATES, for all of those attending - we're taking the advice of our STR elders and changing the route to Kanga's suggestion. We will be bypassing the Strawberry Peak climb and starting off with Colby then into the Gab and then down to JPL. More details can be found here in the calendar entry. If you're shuttling we're meeting up at the JPL lot at 7:00am to depart at 7:30am. If you're riding up, or arranging your own shuttle you can meet us at the top at Redbox Station at 8:15am. See everyone this weekend!!! This ride will be the shit!!!
