Default Photo report from Whiting Ranch

County officials let me in the park early. Here's a preview of what you'll find when Whiting reopens on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Very cool Dave, thanks for posting this up.

Whitting is one of my son Jake's favorite places to ride. We'll be hitting it back up again as soon as he get's back from vacation.

Thanks for the report and photos. I am excited to have Whiting open again.

The second picture is of the house my friend Cassi and myself were standing in when the fire came up the hill at 3 am. We were in the backyard standing by the pool for hours watching Whiting burn with neighbors. It was amazing how the firefighters seemed to have such control over the fire racing up the hill and towering well over the 2 story home.

Now, it will be nice to enjoy Whiting again.

Dave thanks for the report, but the question is, when are we going to get you in the dirt and on a bike? And don't give us that you are too old stuff! And if you do ride when are you going to join us?

Thanks for the pics and stories.

But, why don't you show any hiker footprints from eager neighbors/joggers that wouldn't wait for the park to open instead of just the local mtn dorks that don't have the ability to ride elsewhere? If you consider all the mtn bikers and mtn biking groups that offered help to restore trails, donated money, do trail assistance out there, and have done trail work in the past, it doesn't seem right to only highlight the negative few.

Maybe because it seems to be more remote, I don't know, but Whiting has been one of my favorite parks for the past 15 years from when I first started hiking in the area. It's amazing to see the landscape changes that have occurred since the fire; it's like a whole new park and I'm really looking forward to exploring it as if new. Thanks for the pictures and story.

+1

I was thinking the same thing Rachelle. When I came across that pic, highlighted in the local paper no less, I kinda winced.

Perhaps those tire tracks are from a legitimate patrol of the area?

People love the damn place, and most think that including the Luge makes for an Epic. Personally its a fun ride to do after work in the middle of the week but if my employer was not right down the street I would not go out of my way to ride it.

Alright I don't mean to sound cynical it is a fun place to blast out some single track due to the prolonged slope. You can get a good rolling flow for a while versus just a few minutes at a place like Aliso. But if I have all day climbing real mountains is far more gratifying.

Good call Beth, there was a patrol done by members of SHARE TAV last week sanctioned by the Ranger Vickie. We were trying to schedule another pre-ride before the re-opening but due to heavy equipment in the park, we were denied access. Of course the pre-ride was to make sure the trails were ready and safe for public use.

Thank goodness that there are large mountain ranges in the world (Wasatch, Rockies) to accommodate the superior skills of some...

Whiting rocks! Especially for those of us that live in the area, it is the perfect short loop for a lunch ride or after work and when tied together with some of the other local trails it can be as "epic" as you want it to be.
