Because I started riding it back in 1990 and burned out on it years ago. Too many hikers and the fun factor is not that great.

Can't wait for the Santiago TT to reopen

How is that new Lenz holding up so far

I wonder how the Mountain Lion factor is going to play now post burn. More or less around since Whiting seems to have quite a few incidences.

Great report. One weird thing. The biker that died there, his name was Mark Reynolds? I'm only asking because I'm pretty sure the guy who died racing Sea Otter this years name was Mark Reynolds as well.

Wow, I wonder if the traffic at Aliso Woods will die down again. It was getting a little crazy there on some weekends! Less wear and tear on the trails will be nice too. Glad to see Whiting is open for those who have been spending the gas to get down here. Most of us are pretty fuel conscious anyway and now with gas prices it can cost $30 roundtrip between the two areas!

If a cat is in Whiting there's a far better chance of seeing him now, that's for sure.

Aliso was crazy busy the last few nights. By the way, I counted 4 guys riding bikes without helmets. Unbelievable! I don't even say anything anymore.

I am glad to see the Mark Reynolds bench was untouched by the fires.

Why so many people ride Aliso and crowd it up when there are sooo many other trails around here in south county is a mystery to me.

i think it's because this trail and el moro are close to the coast where the temp is a bit cooler as opposed to being inland is what gets a lot of the traffic.

Wow!!!! Thanks so much for all the kind words! I've been reading this site for a while. if you want to read some local mountain bike stuff (yeah I do ride) go to "Trails" on this page. Trail Angels, Vision Quest, Traverse, El Moro, and some stuff on drivers killing roadie brothers and sisters.

I used to think the same thing about Whiting before it burned down.

A few months before the fires I rode Whiting /STT / Luge and Whiting was like the 5 freeway.

More open trails means less crowds

maybe because for a 'park' it has some pretty fun and somewhat technical riding if you go down the MIDDLE of the trails...

David, as others have noted the same concern, I was hoping you would explain why you had to point out mountain bikers in a negative light by saying that there were already mountain bike tracks before the park was open (not considering that it could have been a patrol), but you made no mention of tracks from impatient hikers or dog walkers. What do you have against mountain bikers that you want to give us a bad image?

If you forgot, this is what you said, "COULDN'T WAIT: While the area has been closed since October, some mountain bikers entered the park leaving tracks on newly groomed trails."

What was the purpose of this photo and caption? What value did it add to the story?
