Been toying around with the idea of doing Lower Sam Merrill to Sunset to El Prieto. A bit of exposure on LSM on the climb for those not familiar with it. this route says 13.8 miles (1 mile or so on road) with 2600ft of climbing. Always the possibility of making it longer as well. here's one of a bunch of threads with pics from up there. Yeah, that's your's truly down the mountain a bit. ![]() In the last couple rides I've heard a bunch of people haven't ridden the gabes, this would be a good place to start as long as you're ok with exposure. 8am (open to any time though) at JPL parking lot at the end of Windsor Ave. Take the 210 W to Windsor, take that north until the parking lot. |

Man, I am going to get into so much trouble if I take off and do this ride....but let me see what I can work out ( this will require some type of bribery I'm sure)

Definitely interested. My PIKE is in the shop right now, but is supposed to be done Saturday. If that holds, I'm in.
Crash, if everything comes together I'll be down to carpool.

I wanna be that chick "Cha Cha" from Grease who drops the flag as you two head up the mountain to start your drag race. (And except for not having her exotic looks or boobs, I could totally pull it off.) |

I might show-up. We'll see how my back is feeling by later today. It's been feeling horrible for the past 10 days and has kept me off the bike for 2 weeks. If I make it, you'll most likely see me on your way up LSM or @ the ruins. I don't like starting from JPL. I park @ Altadena Drive & Lake Ave. and hit the back streets.

So, it look's like I should be in. I'd like to bring Jake along too.
What kind of pace are you guy's planning on riding? Cruzing or crushing? ![]() I know he can handle the 14 mile distance, he's a little slow on the climbs though, and I don't want him to feel like he's holding everybody up. If it's cool with you all, I'll bring him along. If not, no worries, I understand. Also, are you still planning on meeting at 8:00?

Just a bunch of pavement between JPL and Lower Merrill. I would shuttle that out or follow Joe's back street route. That is a pretty short route, maybe you should climb up to Inspiration Point and add Middle Merrill.

David, one could take Chainey Trail off Loma Alta (flashing light) and up the paved Mt. Lowe Road but IMO, that sucks more then LSM. On LSM, at least you have legitimate reasons to stop. Paved road, you really don't.
From JPL lot, it's actually closer to 3 miles and some up to the trail head. I'm not starting from JPL but for those who are, I'd suggest once you reach Altadena Drive and Lincoln, head east on Altadena Drive and start traversing north and east (zig-zag) vs. taking Loma Alta east all the way to the trail head. Nothing more discouraging then looking up and seeing nothing but up for a mile. P.S. Present or not present, it's a given that I'll give you crap. You're screwed, one way or another! ![]()
