Default San Clemente Single Track Questions

I will be down there tomorrow...never been, not sure what time I will get there but need to be in my truck, loaded and back on the road at 6pm. I need to know:

Where to start?
Is it a loop? If not how do I get back to my truck?
Parking fee?
Mileage?
Estimated time for completion at a medium pace?
Elevation gain?
Does the trail start as a climb or a down and then back up and out?

Directions from the path much appreciated.

Check out this cool SC Single Tracks write-up by STR member Team Smitty:

Glitter gulch and beyond - The trails here pop-up almost overnight, I know there are at least two groups that put together some kick- ass fun and quality trails.
The park service officially named some of the trails recently in an attempt “legitimize” some of these bootleg trails. The new trail names are typical of what you would expect from a government agency,, Native American Indian names…..what a crock, as if the Indians went up and down the sides of these hills, switch backs, wood plank bridges and all.

While I won’t name trails others have worked hard to make, I wish the trails were named by the guys that put in the effort. My ridden buddies and I have our own names for the trails ……..Ammo Can, Rick’s, Jeff’s, G-OUT, Switch Back, Glitter Gulch, Sink-Hole, Cow tank, Short side, Long side, Cross-over, Hole- shot, Bone Yard and BATMAN. All of the trails mentioned are single track and there are more trails yet to be finished let alone named.

Hats off to TWTF and anyone who helps develop this small area.

Now go ride!!!!

it's not the best place to go by yourself the first time.

It's a misleading if you go on your own. Park at the dog park on LA Pata. There's a vague map there. It's not really down, or up first-It's a little of everything. Good times though.

Study my dashboard on Geoladders.com for all my Pendleton Singletracks Routes. I have about 20 of them uploaded.

I found a new (for me) sweet little ST on Tuesday at SCST. After the second bridge just past the narrows I turned left and climbed up (Like we did on the STR ride). Instead taking the trail off to the right towards the twin oak ravine and river bed, I stayed to the left and went upwards. Instead of climbing straight up, the trail just wound round the hill side working upwards. I finally ended up near the top of the hill on the back side then the trail threaded me back down and I ended up back on twin oaks trail back by the power grid. The down hill section was awesome. I had a blast… Heading back, it was the first time I’ve ridden back up and over the first two bridges toward dog park. Every other time I’ve been out there I ended up taking the fire road back. I thought heading out of dog park was fun, reversing back up was really a blast and challenging for me to grind up the switchbacks.

The trail was from the top of the ridge to the power plant, is one of the oldest one out here. It's cool to see people re-discover these less traveled trails.
The double bridge trail (holeshot) was designed as a simple uphill to get out to the dog park. It sure is fun going down though.

Default rode SC first time on Wednesday

I rode there by myself and had a blast exploring the ST. Went straight down the trail out of dog park and across the bridges, then turned right to parallel Christianitos. Fun section with lots of quick turns and small hills (and a rattlesnake who met me face to face at the top of a short steep grind.) Past where the trail runs into the road, I climbed a bit of fireroad up and found a couple sections of fun steep down.

I graduated from SCHS, live in San Juan, and have been riding the local stuff for 25 years, mostly right from my garage. Very surprised to see what I had been missing down there. Whoever is developing SC - cheers to ya. Let me know and I'll come down to help.

You can take a look at my Geoladders dashboard as well. I have about 35 rides posted on there, a lot might be very similar, but there are so many variations on a theme out here. Go ride and have fun!

As far as time, you can ride for an hour or you can ride for three hours, it all depends on how much time you have. The good thing about SCST is if you need to leave in a hurry you just climb any trail to the fire road and you are back to the dog park in 5-10 mins from just about anywhere out there.

What time are you going? If you post a ride there is a good chance someone will join you and show you around.

Have fun!!!

That's what is great about SCST. You can just keep looping, and looping. An hour there feels like a 2+ hour ride most everywhere else. I rode back by TRW yesterday, for the first time in a while. Good Times.

let me know what time you'll be there if you don't want to ride alone. It's only 10 minutes from my house and I can make it around 4:00.

Got bitched at for "thinking" of bringing my bike down to ride when I was just supposed to come down to hang out...rode my spin bike instead and now heading down...lame I know.
