I just verified with the Caltrans website, and Ortega Hwy (SR-74) will be closed, but according to the website it will be re-opened on 4/22.

See http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/

(You'll need to enter the highway number to find the latest information)

According to the CalTrans link, they re-open the road at 5:00 am each day. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see an issue. It looks like the wife and kids will be out of town this Easter, so I should be able to make this one.

Whoops, I read through the information too fast. CalEpic is right, it's just a night closure, so there is no impact on the Sunday ride.

more people is better, that way you can just go behind someone and then if you emss up you have someone to blame it on

San Juan holds up to the rain better than any trail, but if it is raining Sun is a no go.

ride usually takes about 3:30 hours, with a group add 30-60 minutes. But Tom did post this as a non-begginer ride, so I wouldn't expect it to take more than one hour.

This ride is about 22miles and 4-5 hours of riding, looks like klutter is bringing the s/s also.

Jose this ride will be like Art smith but twice as long.
The climb to cocktail rock is about 1.5 hrs and about 8 miles of really cool single track w/challenging switchbacks, 30 min rest then about 45-60 min loop through viejo tie back to cocktail rock, rest 20 min then haul the mail 8 miles of smokin downhill to the parking lot.
Balllllllllllllllllllllllllllls baby!!!!!!
You rode pretty good in palm springs. This ride will be about 2 hours faster. The climb is fairly relentless, kind of like climbing lower Sam Merril at Mt. Lowe.
Toshiro Mifune would attack like Kami kazi.

It's only 22 miles if you go up to the Blue Jay Camp ground if you just do the viejo tie loop its more like 18 miles

Jose, you should go for it. It is a lot of climbing, nothing super steep until you get past Cocktail Rock. If you've never done San Juan, definitely put it on your "to do" list. All of the lower switchbacks were cleanable the last time we were there, some/most of the upperones are a bit trickier and will probably require you to dismount. We posted pix of our last group ride there, we did the lamest shuttle version ever, but it was pretty fun. Next time we need to shuttle from the Blue Jay camp area to the Candy Store, not from the bottom/start of San Juan to the Candy Store, whose idea was that again?!?!?!
