Default "Beat the Heat" Ride -Saturday 6-14-08

When: Saturday June 14, 2008, Meet at 7:00am - Riding by 7:15am. Meet at the Castaic Sports Complex.
Directions: Exit at Parker Rd. off of I-5 north in Castaic. Turn right from offramp and right again at first stop sign. This goes back along the freeway about 1/3 mile to Castaic Sports Complex (you can see the parking lot just before you exit the freeway). We'll meet in the parking lot closest to the street right next to the entrance in front of the gymnasium. I will be in a red Scion tC coupe.

Just to give you a rough idea of drive time: This is about 25-30 minutes from West LA, 30-35 minutes from Pasadena, 45 minutes from Ventura and about one hour from Orange County (Disneyland).

What/Where: Ride Tapia Canyon area in Castaic. About 15+ miles all together if we do both (Chicken Run & Burn Victim) versions of the singletrack descent. The plan is to climb the fire road on the first loop, descend Chicken Run, the climb up the singletrack on the second loop and descend Burn Victim. About 15+ miles with two rounds of singletrack descending that always leave 'em smiling.

Who: Everyone is welcome. No rider will be left behind.

The weather has been warm later in the morning and in the afternoon, but very nice (cool) in the morning, so that's why we have the early start time. Where is 'June Gloom' when you need it. 'June Gloom' everywhere else usually means perfect weather here, but it looks like we may skip the 'gloom' this year. Oh well, we'll deal with it.

How to RSVP: Since the 'system' is down, here's how we'll make up our RSVP list: I'll put my handle up first. If you're going to make it, just copy and paste the list into your reply and add your name to the bottom of it.

See you Saturday.

ShiKen, let me know when you can make it up. This ride is definitely 'SS Friendly' IMO.
------------------
Finally got some 'June Gloom' this morning, so maybe it'll be extra nice. I'm heading to do some recon right now.

I saw what looked like two 'bee trucks' there the other day and they looked to be loaded with hives on their way out This would be extra good news, but not by any means critical.

EDIT: Went for a ride today and at least 2/3 of the hives were gone including 'the gauntlet'. We rode through relatively unmolested around 11am. Nice.

"the gauntlet" are you talking about the bee hives on both sides of the road towards the top where the road kinda Ss around into them, then just past them is a slight down hill to another set of hives on both sides of the road just before an up hill?
if we are talking about the same place, i use to ride through there from the other side of the mountain (from the San Fransiquito side) right out my garage literally 200 yards the fire roads start. but haven't been up there since they put those stupid things in, i might have to go backup and checkit out.

Yeah, that's the ones. The hives that were on both sides, very close together (what I refer(red) to as 'the gauntlet') are gone altogether . There are still some hives further back, but there are fewer of them than there were and they are further from the road. We went through toward the middle of the day when they would normally have been pretty active and had no problems whatsoever

Do you know how to find the trail (mostly singletrack) that parallels the road with the hives? We've been using it and it's actually a fun alternative, but you kind of have to know which forks to take.

The singletrack option is a great alternative. It has some challenging steep but short climbs and cruises through the bottom of a canyon with a lot of cool different flora. Great photo material. It has a nice little downhill section too, about halfway through.

Wish I were healed up enough to hit it up with you guys.

Where's the 'ouch' button when you really need it...

Jose was the first person to introduce himself at our first STR ride

b-40: We like the gully so much, we're going to do it twice . We just have two different ways to get to it. I have my own name for that trail. I call it the 'two mile smile' cuz it always leaves me smiling, especially the mile that runs through the gully.

lmnop, great news, see you Saturday!

Hey, thanks to all that showed this morning. I would have taken some pics, but Mike's massive codpiece required a wider focal length than I had available just to see around it...
