Orange Y BMX track this Friday!! All are invited. Practice and sign-ups are 5:30 to 7:30 on Fridays, and races begin shortly after registration closes. I get there at about 6:00ish. Show up to practice on the track, or Practice and try out your racing skilzz! If you are in spectator mode there are a lot of open seats in the bleachers(practice your heckling)! So no excuses. Be there or be....... An ABA membership is required (although 1-day memberships are available). If you don't have a BMX bike, mountain bikes are OK! All you need is: - helmet (XC Helmet is OK, but full face helmets are better) - long sleeve shirt - pants All info here on the website: http://orangeybmx.com/ Orange Y BMX 2241 E. Palmyra Orange, California Directions: The track is located in the city of Orange east of the 55 Freeway. Take the Chapman off ramp exit east to Yorba Street, turn right to Palmyra. Turn right on Palmyra, the track is located at the end of Palmyra on the right. HUGH |

+1 to that! friggin man love...
But anyways, I'll definitely be there. Hugh always gets a lot faster than me when I don't show up Perhaps I'll bring the 26" with some *gasp* clipless pedals! MUAHAHAHAHHAHA time for some awesome power jumping action! Oh yah, and that whole bike that fits me thing too. I think I'll try my hand at racing this week as well. we'll see how things are going with the bike first. |

Hugh, you really should at least try doing a race once, You're a pretty quick rider, even if you aren't hitting all the doubles/tables/manualing everything. If you don't like it, just go back to practicing and eating cupcakes in the stands ![]() |

Find a block wall (or some similar surface) taller than your tire, get on your bike, roll up against the unmoveable object, put your pedals at approximately the 6 and 9 positions, put your brakes on and stand up. Focus on an object in your line of vision and practice balancing. Once you can do it standing up, then move back and forth between sitting and standing and then increase the amount of time. You should practice this every day untill you get it down!!! Roger and I are going to try to make it out this week. He borrowed a Brodie Holeshot hardtail and he rode at the Perris track last night!!!

There are many ways to learn how to balance in the gate. The key is to understand that you're not just balancing by your weight, but you balance by turning your handlebars with your wheel wedged against the gate, fence, curb, wall, etc. If you start falling toward the right, you turn the bars to the right. Only small movements are required.
While growing up, I used the curb in front of my house. It wasn't as tall as the wheel, but it worked ok. Being on a slight downhill really helps, which it is so much easier getting into the gate at the track is so much easier than the practicing on flat ground. Another way to practice is to have someone hold the rear wheel between their legs while you try to balance. Just like training wheels, it gives you an opportunity to learn the balancing points. Carla initially learned to balance like this against the chain-link fence in the staging area behind the starting hill. After only a few minutes of doing this, she was balancing on the gate. Last Sunday at Perris, Ko was excited that she was able to finally balance standing in the gate. ![]() ![]()

Thanks to Lee and Hugh for helping me with my pedals last Friday at the track.
You would have had a good laugh if you had seen me trying to get the eggbeaters off to put them back on my mountain bike last night. |

SO NICE of you to ask Hugh, the brake seems to be working fine!
Actually, I'm thinking of using the platforms this week to practice balancing at the gate. It's probably safer practicing without being clipped in, which could potentially be very embarassing for me. |
