Default Whiting to Joplin 03/07

I just decided to ride this route, maybe someone will join. Here is the description off geoladders.com

This route gives you the best Whiting Ranch has to offer as well as the leg burning climb to Modjeska Peak via Harding and the technical descents down the ever challenging Joplin Trail. Once down Joplin you get to continue descending singletrack along the Santiago Truck Trail (from Old Camp), The Luge and, finally, along Whiting's singletrack sections. You work on the front end and play towards the back of this route.

Default Huh?

Sounds like a great ride but I'm pretty sure Whiting will be closed due to the rain and the Luge should be a muddy mess. Maybe start and end at STT gate.

Yeah, I can't figure that one out. Craig, you used to have the best avatars on here. What happened?

I know. It's weak. It's supposed to be an animated gif of the Night at the Roxbury characters from Saturday Night Live. They sandwich the girl, and bump her back and forth. In this case spilling her drink. I'm not smart enough to make it work on here though.

I'll dig a little deeper but it will be tough to top Dino's strange obsession with OCRider.

What a disaster today, I just spent the last hour trying to get all the mud off my bike. Craig, I will never question your wisdom again.

Against advice I started out in Whitting. The bottom part was fine, but as soon as I started climbing Mustard it got muddy. Half way up it was really muddy and I finally gave up about 3/4 of the way up Mustard. By then my chain, derailer, tires, crank, etc. were so muddy I decided not to pedal at all on the way back down. I didn't want to mess up my drive train.

Dang Steve, if it was that muddy I can't believe it was open (or was it open ).

It was actually open, but even if it was closed I still would have just gone over the gate.

Steve - That would be wrong to go over the fence if they are closed. I'm sure you meant the gate at STT.

I have had that happed to me on Mustards. Within minutes of a light rain that road turned into a clay mess. Could not even push my bike up it as the wheels too caked with mud to turn. Ended up carrying a 30 pound bike + 20 lbs of mud to 4-corners...bailed out to Silverado and road the pavement back around to the start.
