I am going up Friday AM and trying to get a campsite at Pineknot. If that does not work I will Yellow Post Camp on Keller Peak Road.

As Tracy mentioned, I'll be leading a noobie friendly ride in Big Bear. For those newer riders who want to try out some of the best trails in So Cal, but lack the technical expertise to hit Fall Line, this ride is for you.

The loop will run right around 12 miles with maybe 700' - 900' vertical feet of climbing. The bright side is that we will be using the lifts to get to the top. No 5 mile grind climb to the top!

Tentatively the loop will start at the lifts and head west along Skyline Dr. (2N10) to Grand View Point. If you wish a bit of extra credit, we can climb to the point and take in the view of SART and Redlands in the distance. Continuing west on Skyline to what I think is the best single-track trail in terms of flow on the mountain - Plantation Trail. After trying to wipe the smile off our faces, we will climb back up to the top of Pineknot Trail via 2N17 and enjoy 4 miles of great single-track all the way down the mountain to Aspen Glen Picnic Area.

If everyone is feeling adventurous, we can also add Stonehenge to the route as well without sacrificing anyone.

From there, its hop, skip and a short road ride back through the center of town to Towne Trail and back to the resort. From there you can jump back on the lift to hit it again or go exploring some of the other trails.

As with all STR rides, no one will be left behind and the pace will be moderate. Total saddle time should be right around 90 minutes (group size dependant).

I'm in! What time/where should we meet (at the lifts or at the STR homebase?)????

Edit: Doh, just saw that we are starting from the lifts.

The *newb ride* meets at the lifts but to get the discount - you'll need to come get your discount ticket at STR Homebase Not the lifts We'll see you there!

Sorry I should have been more clear, I meant for the noobie ride! So my question I guess still stands for ghixon... I know we will have to get our discount ticket from the STR Homebase but depending on what time the Noobie Ride he talked about starts shall we meet at the Homebase or the Lifts and what time?

In for a maybe. 82 miles to the park. If anyone's up for a carpool i'd be more inclined to go.

heck i might just sleep in my car overnight anyway and come up.

the "technical trail", what's that like?

Still tossing around a hotel room, remote camping or a drive up in the am. I know it's getting down to the wire...

have been off bike for a bit but i i feel brave i may climb to top to meet you and join in from lift....the few times i have been there have only hit lift once and biked up the rest. its a grind but nothing that cant be done with a smile (unless you're still drunk from night before....not that i would know anything about that)

For the sake of simplicity, it might be easist to meet at home base and go from there.

Thanks for setting up a newbie ride Greg, I'm hoping to bring my son up. He told me today that he wants to go camping so this seems like the perfect timing.

It would be great to get a spot right next to the fire road where all the down hill trails ends. Can someone remind me of which camp that is. It's probably gonna be full, since it''s kinda last minute now, but if anyone was extra room for a tent I would be more than happy to chip in.

Thanks!

Pineknot Campground is near the lifts.

North side of the Lake near Fawnskin is Serrano Campground. Serrano Campground has showers, Pineknot does not.

Feel free to join in Adam. It will be a lot less climbing than the Delmar Mountain Deathmarch we did last year.
