Default Mt. Wilson Trail Sierra Madre - Post fire repair and restoration! Your help is needed

Description:
We are getting ready to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the Mt Wilson Trail race. A wonderful running, hiking and MTB trail. Your help is still needed for post fire trail restoration! The trail was in great condition before hand and needs you help to bring it back. There is a lot of mcLeod and shovel work to do. We need to cover about a mile within the next week.

The trail is very dusty. The fire has charred the shrubs and underlying root systems. Hence, the roots have turned to ash and have collapsed leaving parts of the trail very soft.

Recommended:

It is dusty. Bring a painter's mask!
Bring glasses or other eye wear.
Wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt and hat to avoid dust.. A change of clothes is also recommended for your return home.
Bring water

For updates please feel free Call John Grace - 213-265-2015

Location: Mt Wilson Trail in Sierra Madre (Mira Monte and Mount Wilson Trail rd.)
Meeting Time: Saturday May 10th @ 8AM till noon (or when you can.)Directions: Off the 210 Freeway, exit Baldwin Ave North. Take Baldwin Ave North to Mira Monte. Turn right. Drive down to the intersection of Mt Wilson Trail and Mira Monte. Park along the street.

Gawd, I love these long notices where you'll have time to put it on the calender and not make any other plans for the day.

It may just be me, but I think it's almost to the side of being rude to post something like this with such a short notice. So many of us would love to help out but have made plans for the weekend by now.

Sorry, I've got plans already, but had you or someone else posted this up two weeks ago you would of had a lot of people from here joining up.

Mike, in fairness, the fire just happened last week and I'm sure (speculating) they just got clearance to do trail work in the last day or two. I was up there 2 days ago and the trail was closed with posted signs everywhere. I'm guessing this group is part of the Mt. Wilson Trail Race organization. They have a race up there on May 24th and I'm sure they're scurrying to get the trail fit and cleaned-up in time. I haven't seen the damage first hand but I hear it's up to the First Water. http://www.mountwilsontrailrace.com/

Thanks Joe! You are correct!

I wish I had the time earlier to post. The Forest Service just gave us access to the trail on Monday. So I didn't know if/when or what dates I could post. We have been working and surveying the trail over the past few days. The race is in two weeks. If I could have organized this any earlier I would've. Believe me. I could've gotten a better discount on some Keystone!

I am former participant of the MWBA in the mid to late 90s. Over the past few years, I have been working w/ CORBA on a variety of projects. Hans / CORBA has helped us in tracking down equipment to work on this.

This does represent a great opportunity from the MTB community to interact with the running and hiking community. This is a very big race for the running community and they appreciate the help we are able to give. If you can make it. Thanks! If not, I am sure there will be another well planned event we work together on!

Thanks, John. I realize the urgency and short notice now. Makes perfect sense.

Getting some mountain bikers up there along with runners/hikers and other trail workers is great press for us, not to mention doing some good work on a trail we all love and use frequently. I hope to make it this Saturday and I hope more riders drop by and lend a helping hand.
