Default Training Ride #2

Riding the second half of the Counting Coup/Vision Quest course

Saturday the 14th OR Sunday the 15th (not decided yet)

There are two options that have not been decided (splitting up into two groups is also a possibility)

-Up Maple Springs to the Peaks and down

Or

-Up Maple Springs to the Peaks and down HolyJim (possible with a car shuttle to avoid road riding)

Lots of distance, climbing and elevation gain

Shouldnt as hard as Blackstar to Motorway though....

Do the Maple Springs/Peak/Upper Holy Jim/Lower Holy Jim and ride back around to the cars at Silverado/Blackstar. It ends up deing about 42 miles. The road ride back is not that bad, plus it just adds to the workout. The only bad section of road is Live Oak, then Santiago Canyon is fine. You can replenish water at O'Neil Park.

Upper Holy JIm is a really fun trail, and a must for anyone doing either VQ or CC.

If we were to go up and over the peaks to HolyJim, I'd definitley want to hit UpperHJ. I've never done and I have no clue where it starts.

I think the road would be ok, you get a long break from the climbs since the last climb would be reaching SantiagoPeak.

The last 6miles up to the parking lot of Maple would be brutal. Maybe park at down by Blackstar... I dont know, its gona be tought no matter what

Park down at the intersection of Silverado and Blackstar. This gives you a really nice warm up ride up to the beginning of Maple Springs.....plus you don't have to ride it at the end of the ride.

Upper Holy Jim is very easy to miss. From the peak head down about a mile or two. YOu will enter a very large right hand turn that is actually a huge switchback.....looks like a place where people are riding thier motorcycles. Look over to your right and you will see a small singletrack that looks like it just ducks off the fire road.....that is the trail head. I don't think it is marked. I have attached a pic of what the trail head are look like. It is on the left side of the pic near where the photographer is standing.

If we can organize some sort of shuttle and do upper/lower HJ I think I'll come. I certainly don't want to do all that pavement riding....uphill

agree with Rob. If we ride up Maple to the peaks and down HolyJim I really dont think its that hard of a ride.

Im in for a shuttle... I can drive 3-4bikes and people

We'd need a head count so we know how to organize the shuttle. Obviously we'd park some cars at Live Oak/Trabuco Creek and then go to the MS parking lot. So if we rode from the MS lot, up to MD, peaks, upper/lower HJ, trabuco creek rd it would be about 22-23 miles???

I'm in for SUNDAY as well. And like the others, I'd prefer to see how I'm feeling after MS->Peaks->HJ->TrabucoCrkRd before I committed to the extra milage BACK to Silverado Canyon. I'd say ~24 miles is probably a good estimate by my reckoning.

I'm up for driving too. I've got an Xterra with a rear rack. Realistically, I can have 3 bikes, 3 people, and gear. I could probably squeeze a 4th person in the vehicle, but 4 bikes WILL NOT fit on the rack...unless we were all bringing hardtails.

I think bananaseat is in also, he has a truck. I have a Civic so I can only get 2 bikes/2 people in it max.

sweet... it looks like this ride is comming along!

Soo it looks like everyone needs to meet at the corner of LiveOak and Trabucco dirt parking lot at a certain time.. Then leave a truck or two there then drive to the MapleSprings parking lot.

By they way I just checked my bike rack and it hold 3. But its possible to fit one bike inside the car.

I'd have to agree with you 100%!

If Sunday is called off, I could probably do this ride on Monday...

CalEpic had expressed interest in the ride if the weather holds. I'll let him chime in if he's going for sure or not though

So you finally got your fork Matt?

well not exactly.. The fork came today and apparently it had to signed for and no one was home. So I found FedEx's note on my door when I got home.
So it will be here tomorrow. Hopefully I can do a clean swap and it will be all good.
