Default Trail Work - Santiago Oaks

SHARE is hosting trail work for two more trails in Santiago Oaks Regional Park this weekend. We were able to get 4 trails opened last week and these two will make it 6 before the public meeting there on the 16th. Come join the momentous event!
We will meet in the parking lot at the ranger's station/park office at 8:30 a.m. and head up to Taco at 9:00. Tools will be provided and shuttled to the trail by the rangers. So biking up is an option, if you'd like.
To get there, take 55 FWY to Katella. Go east (Katella will become Santiago Canyon Rd). Turn left on Windes. Follow Windes all the way down, through the neighborhood, to the gate at Santiago Oaks Regional Park. Tell the gate attendant you are there for SHARE trail work and you will not be charged for parking.

Thanks and hope to see you there!

I'm going to try to make it down there for this, and I'd be down to ride afterwards. I've never ridden at Santiago Oaks, so this would be a great opportunity to work and play.

How long will you guys be there? I looked for you last week but you guys were already done. By the way, nice work, I noticed the new trail on Chutes near where that skinny bridge used to be.

We're big fans of the 9 to noon shift.
Depending on how many volunteers, we can get a lot done in that time.
Then, if we need to extend, there are usually a handful of people who are willing to keep going.

Hope to see ya there!

Road Oaks yesterday morning, and stoped in to meet ranger Jim. Nice guy. Seemed really enthusiastic about getting the trails in good shape. He actually seemed bummed that the County wouldn't let him re-open the original route on Waterfall.
It's nice to have the single track section back at the top of the second "B". It need's to be ridden to knock down the cut brush. And the by pass on Chutes is really cool. We need to figure out a way to let riders (mtb's and horseback) know that it is an up-hill route.
It looked to me that riders have been descending it. I didn't see any hoof prints at all on it.

I hope lot's of user's show up on Sunday so we can get a lot done.

Chutes uphill? Eek. That's an accident waiting to happen. Don't know if I'd be encouraging people to ride up it.

Thanks Darin,
The waterfall route not a dead issue. Keith and I, when speaking with the rangers and OC parks about it, both felt that if only one trail on Goat was to remain open, it should be the original, waterfall route.
Their stance went from "no" to "we'll consider it further".
If this is something anyone happens to agree with, the meeting on the 16th would be a good time/place to bring it up. Remember, there are no "plans" yet, only "proposed plans". The county values MTB'er feedback and actually does consider it heavily.
Personally, it's my favorite section of trail in the park and I'm still optimistic about getting it back on the map.

PS, Weir Canyon Loop is open again too. If I can, I'd like to hit that up Sunday afternoon... if I can ride wit'ya, that is!

Later~

We ride up it all the time. It makes for a great ride, up Chutes, down Goat, up the Three "B's", back across the ridge(Barnahm) and down Chutes.
Great climbs and descents!

Hit it up yesterday and rode the newly opened trails to knock down the brush. Though I too like riding up the chutes... I think its dangerous when people with their ipods try it. I have run into my fair share of people on that trail in the past. Only because it wasn't a mutual get out of the way thing. I even stopped completly once and the guy climbing only looked up when he hit my front wheel and then took his ipod off and started to yell at me for being in his way. If was any bigger, I would have thought about ripping him off his bike, but I was a pansy ass that day. Its not as bad now since the folage is down low, but once it starts to grow, watch out. Unfortunately you come bombing down the chutes and the people coming up don't look up and can't hear with their ipods on. I know the climber has the right of way, but hey, its a local rule to watch out for riders coming down and be respectful mutually. Any other trail is fine, but this is the chutes we are talking about here. Its like riding up Velocity in Mammoth.

I was asked to ride up them last night myself, and I respectfully declined, knowing that its 5:30 and thats when most people are coming down them. I wouldn't want to ruin a good run for them. Besides, we need some riders on the cutoff of 2nd b, hotdog, and powerline. I checked those out last night and I can't wait till we get that back in shape. It such a great addition to the ride.

Thumbs up Bump

Just wanted to bump this up.

There were a lot of us that had issues when they closed some of the trails. It would be REALLY GOOD to show up in force, and show that we will take care of trails we love to ride.

Given that I don't have any major aches and pains from my bad right hip, I'll be driving down from West LA for some trail work and my first STR ride! Is there a Katella exit from the 5?

Get off the 5 south at Jamborree and go left back under the freeway untill you hit Chapman.

You should be able to get directions from the park link; http://www.ocparks.com/santiagooaks/

There is a Katella exit off the 5, but don't take it. You'll never get there. Go south past Katella, take the 22 east to the 55 north, and get off at that Katella exit.

I love giving directions around here. The shortest distance is never a straight line.
