If you're on the same team, you won't actually see eachother much the whole day because one of you will always be on the course. That's why a bunch of us went solo in Jan. We wanted to TRY to ride together some. But that doesn't always go as planned. C

there was a post earlier on how to prepare, its pretty good, but could someone take a few minutes and maybe give us beginner solo guys some tips and advice, what types of rides to go on, anything that can be helpfull, maybe what do you eat during the ride, the days before the ride,
what to expect during the ride, stuff like that, i am really interesed in this, i would love to do some XC racing as well, just need to get in better shap. still got some noob legs, but they are more on the experienced noob side.

Ask the Expert..(MP3 to the courtesy phone please!) I'm a relative endurance noob too. Only 2 events. But basically you need to build your cardio and endurance base by doing long rides. Probably one a week. Work up the length SLOWLY. I mean, if 2hours of riding is your max right now. Slowly add maybe 30min. to your long ride a week. So eventually do at least 75% of what the distance/elevation gain of your target event is. Of note, just don't think about total mileage. Elevation gain is really important too. If you thinking you're gonna do 5 laps at Temecula. That's was 65miles and about 7000 ft of climbing based on January's course. During the week, you can work on things like intervals, and harder efforts to raise your lactic threshold and build speed. The other stuff to think about is working on strengthening your back, shoulders, and core muscles for being on the bike a long time. Finetuning your bike setup. I also find stretching more is very help ful too. Lastly nutrition. Start playing around with Nutrition. You need a nutrition plan. I.e. how many calories/electrolytes/water you need to have per hour. And where you're going to get them from. Take a look at the VQ/CC "whatyougonnaeat" thread. Lots of ideas there. Try different stuff out. Some stuff may upset your stomach. I think you need to kinda train your stomach to process calories while you're riding too.

But, if your max ride is 2 hours now, push through and just do long days. I wouldn't worry about mileage as much as just being out there for like 4-6 hours to push your time. This race is just around the corner! Don't necessarily do XC loops either since you can easily just stop after 2 if you are tired. Make a bigger loop and then you have to finish ![]() |

Haha. Allison then you guys should then go back to the girls vs. boys setup then! Wow, I can now see you two couples fighting over who gets to put the lightest parts/tires on their rigs for race day. Trizz, I just threw out slow building starting with 2hours b/c I didn't know where you're at fitness wise. Allison makes a great point. Long days in the saddle are totally necessary. They'll train your mind to push through that breaking point that happens to everyone. The race is close, but you don't want to overtrain too fast. You'll just end up being more tired and getting negative results. I hear checking your rest HR in the morning is a good way to monitor this. If you see it slowly drifting up it may mean you're doing too much too soon. There's lots of superstrong riders on this forum. Hope some more chime in.

I'm a FUN-GI!
|
I'm game for a team if anyone's interested. I'll even bring spare chains!
I'll want to push myself a little, but I don't care about placing...just care about finishing and having fun. If you're in the same mindset, lemme know!
