Default Strawberry Peak Backwards

We will meet at Clear Creek Junction and then take the Gabreillino trail up to Red Box then ride up the Mount Wilson Road to the Valley Forge trail and drop down to the Gabreillino and take that back up to Red Box. You can also take the Red Box/Rincon fire road up to Red Box for an easier option. We will then climb the Strawberry Peak trail to the Colby trail and ride the Colby around Strawberry Peak and then down to the Crest Highway.

Another option is to bail out at Red Box after the Valley Forge and Gab trails for a shorter ride.

This will be a intermediate to advanced ride due to some technical single track climbs and descents with some exposure.

Directions: Meet at 8:00 am at Clear Creek junction. Take the Angeles Crest Highway around 9 miles north of the 210 freeway to the Angeles Forest Highway and park there at the junction of Angeles Forest and Angeles Crest Highways.

Hans, great route...although not a easy one. I will have to think before I jump on the whole ride.

See ya next Sunday on Middle Merrill.

Dean, Keep in mind there are a few options to make it easier! If you skip the Gab from Valley Forge and take the road that saves a lot of energy. Going up Strawberry from Red Box is pretty easy until you get to the Colby Trail then we have a bit of a grind for a mile or two.

I have done the reverse Strawberry without the Valley Forge part. I like that route better than the normal clockwise route. Even though it the reverse loop seeems tougher, not climbing Josephine and Colby Canyon decent make it my preferred way to ride Strawberry.

Hans, when was the last time you started Strawberry from Colby Bridge in Big Tujnga Canyon?

I have never started there. When we ride that section of trail we have started at Red Box and rode out and back. Also on our Epic Chilao ride from Millard to Chilao we ride the Strawberry Peak trail to Upper Big Tujunga Canyon road and then up Alder Creek Trail to Chilao.

Hey what do you guys think the snow situation will be like? I'm guessing some snow in Strawberry Portrero, since it's a North-facing section of the trail.

I'll likely pre-ride it a few days before and report back. If it doesn't look doable, we might change the route, but there will still be a ride (unless weather dictates otherwise).

Very cool! I'm looking forward to this one, whatever the final route is.

That all depends on who shows up!

I would hope to keep it at a moderate to fast pace. We will stop a few times for photos and to smell the flowers of course

Default Wishful thinking

Depending on my glycogen stores that day, I may go up Brown, down Burton, up Gab or up Lowe and meet you guys at Redbox while you do the VF loop. Then I could ride Strawberry and Colby with you guys and take Gab or Merrill and Sunset back. This would be a sweet ride- or maybe a bonk waiting to happen. Only one way to find out.

Are there any water spots around there... I don't have a filter.

I was also thinking of starting at the bottom. There's water at Redbox, and reliable stream water along the Gab, the bottom of Valley forge, and the bottom of Colby, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I'll meet you guys at Redbox or possibly Switzers(the late sunrise might prevent this).

Hey I gotta miss this one after all. I offered a friend a favor (moving a project truck) and he picked this Saturday to cash it in. I'll go on a ride after the truck-moving takes place, but I'll miss your start time.

Have fun. I'll be there in spirit.

This one is coming up... Singletrack, you still gonna start at the bottom? I might head up friday for some pre-ride recon and make sure there's not too much snow still left up on the back of strawberry.

i've not ridden the singetrack from josephine saddle to down to ACH- how's that section? rocky and technical-- but -- worthwhile? a quickie after-work ride could be up the fireroad to josephine saddle, down the singletrack?

There are some technical spots, and some exposure in places, but overall it's a great trail. I can usually clean the whole thing, bar one creek crossing near the bottom. At the bottom of Colby, if you ride up the ACH road 1.4 miles, you can jump back on the Gab trail, just above the waterfall, and ride that down to Switzers instead of back up the road to Clear Creek. It's a good quick, and fun loop (but a lot of driving to get there).

I think I may be getting sick...or just riding too much. If I feel better tomorrow I'll most likely ride Upper Winter Creek - Sturtevant, camp out on Fri. night and just meet up with everybody at Clear Creek. Sorry to bail out Kanga, the ride you are doing is awesome
