Default SART ON SATURDAY

George and I are going to do SART - Santa Ana River Trial this Saturday. If you don't know SART, you should. We are NOT talking the paved bike trail from Yorba Linda to Newport Beach. We will start at Angelus Oaks, a small town off hwy 38 between Redlands and Big Bear. It is all singletrack, and we do it as an out and back. A steady climb up and turn around to descend back out. Lots of tree cover, plenty of off camber sections. It is a little torn up from the rains, but every report I hear says it is getting in better shape all the time. But we may have some serious stream crossings. Bring plenty of food, water, and sunblock. Figure about a 90 minute drive, we will meet at 8:30. We can make as big a ride as we like out of it, the trail goes all the way to Big Bear, I think, many miles of pristene singletrack to be had. See "Mountain Bike Bill"'s famous page about it, complete with pictures, videos, descriptions, and directions:

Dang Alan..that sounds like fun. Only problem is that I have an Open House that day. Hmmm..if I wake up really really early and clean the house...maybe...

Yeah SART is definetly a must do in socal. Just be ready for many tree crossings along the way. Also the deer flies are really a nuisence (sp) so get some deet if you got it. I tihnk that day we got in about 36 mi in 7 hrs. Im hoping to do it again near the end of the month. Have fun!

Great ride today guys. I posted 10 pics under "Other Trails" in the album section. It was about as good as it gets, including the "bonus" (i.e., getting a mite lost) portion. It all counts. Here's my tally including the bonus (some estimated): 28 miles, 4000 vert, 1 flat, 1 busted chain, one bike down the cliff ( a guy in another group, but had to mention it- he's OK and he got his bike back in pretty good shape), one stream crossing attempt, one stream crossing failure, one missed turn. Trail was in darn good shape- still a few down trees but mostly clear.

- edit by george: made a new 'San Bernardino National Forest' category and moved the pics there -

Hey there. I met you guys at the trail today (I was the guy on the single speed). Did you guys manage to take some photos of the 'downed' bike? If so, can you send them my way?

Posted my pictures too. Check the san bernadino category in the album.

My 'complete' pictures are here, although I posted most of the good ones in the album. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/archives/sart/

Later on in the day the flies were bugging me, especially on that last climb out.

Longest ride I've ever done, real memorable. Running out of water sucks though, but oh well.

Kutter, there's one picture in the album of you three guys trying to climb down, and in the 'complete' pictures there's a photo where you can barely make out a few helmets at the bottom. It's right after the one of you guys climbing down.

Hey, I think I saw you guys!!! I was camping up a little past Angelus Oaks this weekend with some buddies. We were driving down the 38 on Saturday afternoon to take a look at the Forest Waterfalls off Mill Creek Road. And I saw like four or five cars parked at a turnoff with some people looking like they just finished a ride at 4:20pm on Saturday. I couldn't make out all of the cars (It was only a long glance), but I recognized an older black integra and a mercedes, looked like a C class, and on the back of the benz was a black Yeti with another bike on the rack behind it. Anyways, if it was you guys that's pretty sweet! I would've definitely joined up since I was already there, but my lower back is still not healthy. I haven't ridden in months. It's killing me!

If you guys went all the way to the southfork campground you could've filled up with some water there. If you go that far I think the ride comes out to about 32 mi.

Great pics, George. You definitely captured my not-so-quick repair job on my chain. I'm still having pleasant dreams about that ride.
