Cross Country
Probably the most fun course of the series. This course is 80% fun, fast, flowing single track. The climbs are short with a total elevation gain per lap of 800 feet. The views of the ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains make this 6 mile long course a real jewel.

Super D:
Just like the cross country course, it is fun, fast flowing
single track with limited climbing. The Super D race will be a time trial start.

Downhill:
This will be a two run format. Starting with a spectacular view of the ocean from the start ramp, this course is fast, flowing and non-technical. Ed Brown and his crew have continued to add features making this course lots of fun.

One thing I was confused about - the dates state June 6-7. The festival is June 7-8. They aren't racing on Friday are they?

Default Typo on Team BB website

It looks like it's a typo on Team Big Bear's Flyer (which is where I got the info). If you look on the Santa Barbara Bike Festival website it has it correctly as June 7th-8th.

We did this race 2 years ago, it was a blast! Camping is fun if you can. Campers parked at the bottom (next to the bmx track) and you had to walk or ride up a very long road hill.Tents camped up top so you had to ride down.

Very family freindly, big park with playground, start finish for xc is on the grass at the park.

We will most likely be at the race too.

That is a pretty unique place to hold a DH race, just outside downtown SB. Is that trail normally open to the public? Also how long is it and is is techincal?

I have never been there. I have heard that the course is pretty short and tame (small bike). I have heard people talk about riding there (non-race weekends) but I can't find anything on the Elings Park website. Your best bet would be to email the park and find out.

Did you check out the pictures link? I can't see them at work as the site is blocked.

Default Course Descriptions

DH Course

The downhill course winds down a 400 vertical foot, spectator-friendly hillside which overlooks the Pacific Ocean at Elings South Park area. This years course has been redesigned with multiple table tops, singletrack, bermed switchbacks that drop into a meadow that continue with tabletop jumps and berms to the finish. The race format is a combined two run time with a 12:30 start time for all riders and 20 second start spacing. Shuttle practice will start at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm in the South Park parking lot. The downhill race will run in conjunction with all-day events including XC and BMX racing, live music, great food, and other cycling related activities in the front (North side of the Park).

XC Course

The cross country races will take place on a very spectator friendly, 6+ mile course with mountain and ocean views at Elings Park. The updated course features new trails with the start/finish moving back to the SouthPark off Cliff Dr. In addition to the cross country race there will be live music, tasty food, and many other cycling related activities.

Thanks Nancy. Took a look at the 2006 pics and from the pics the course looks like is had a couple of jumps and super small rockfield that you just jump over. Even if the course isn't great, that should be a very fun venue.

I heard that single speeds are allowed now, but I sent an email to Team Big Bear to confirm. I'll post the answer when I get it.

Is there a place where the # of laps per race is listed? I looked everywhere but can't seem to find it. I'm interested in the beginner mens xc race if that helps.

I also don't see a practice schedule? That probably won't matter much anyway since I might not be able to make it there until Saturday evening, but are these things pretty well marked?

thx

They don't usually "schedule" XC practice if that is what you are referring to?

Basically any time no one is racing on course it's open season!

I've never had a problem following XC courses (or DH for that matter) during a race.

There are times when the courses are split/broken up/extended that it causes some problems, but not often.

It sounds like fun . Maria and I were talking about Elings Park when we passed it on the way up to Santa Ynez. It looks like they are having a tandem class . If Maria finds out she will want to enter . After her first taste of racing at Santa Ynez I think she is hooked .
