Default Str Invades Cheseboro

Join us for the 3rd STR Invasion of "The Westside" !!!

Where: Cheseboro Canyon in Agoura Hills
When: Saturday February 16th, 2008
Time: 8am
Distance: 20 miles (perhaps more)
Skill Level: Intermediate
What To Expect: Nothing too extreme**. Double track, singletrack, fireroads, climbs, DH sections. Stunts,Pretty much a little of everything! **Suicide includes some steep and technical sections (walkable), if it’s necessary

Ride Leader: Todd(aka EPICRIDERAT)

Note: If you have arm/elbow pads- bring them along. While not necessary, there are a few sections you may feel more comfortable having them. Up to you...

Ride route: Up Cheseboro to shepard flats, up to Palo comado lookout, down Poachers and then climb up to China flats, loop around china flats then climb up to Simi peak, down to China flats and a short climb up to Suicide(hike a bike) entrance, down Suicide and cut over to Dead cow, up dead cow, then rip out back to Shepard flats, still want more? we can then drop down gaspipe.

This will be a killer loop and offer many challenges.

Meet at: Cheseboro cyn. parking lot.

Directions: 101 North, exit Cheseboro cyn road, go right and then right again at the Old Agoura town side onto Cheseboro road, drive about 1 mile and turn right into the parking lot.

For those who have never ridden Cheseboro- it is one of the crown jewels of The Westside.

The fact the hills are GREEN (won't be like that for long) should make the ride all the more memorable.

See you there!

Agreed, but there will be options for those chosing not to ride suicide. Such as the less steep dead cow, although some sections are just as rocky, nothing most STR folks can't handle.

agreed...Dead Cow is super fun too! and cuz i am pretty lazy, i take the section to the left before the hike a bike so you start at suicide from a different spot. actually never tried the way you are suggesting!

I'm pretty sure I'll make this.
It'll be like last time, if I can get off of work on time to make the drive.

Maxwell- You are "pretty sure" you will make the ride?

We will be riding trails called Dead Cow, Gaspipe, Poacher's and Suicide! The trail names alone should be reason enough for YOU to be there!

Default Suicide video

Here's a little taste of Suicide. This video is kinda old, the trail is actually a little tamer now, they ran a bobcat up it about year or so back and really smoothed out the lower half. They have also built some new switchbacks around one of the tougher sections.

If you would have just posted the words, "...Here's a little taste of Suicide" followed by the video, Maxwell would have switched his RSVP to YES! That looked like his kind of trail!

This ride sounds very interesting. My question is how do I know if I am 'intermediate?' I'd hate to slow down the group unnecessarily!

You see, I am still timid on the downhills. I rode Box Springs in Riverside and was near the rear of the group, walking some parts of the singletrack (on UCR Racecourse, and Crash and Carnage). I ride the brakes down fireroads going 15 to 25 mph depending upon my comfort level.

Also, I have some fear of heights. The Lower Monroe Truck Trail in Glendora doesn't scare me, but riding on a ridge (where it's down on both sides) sometimes does, if its narrow and somewhat steep.

I'd really like to try this ride, but I'd hate to drive all that way just to slow you guys down!

Thoughts... ?

No need to worry about slowing me down. I'm a slug to begin with, and I have no problem with hanging back with others slugs!

It'll be better to come along and try it out, than to sit back and watch and wish you'd tryed it out.

Rule #1- No Rider Is Left Behind!
Rule #2- It is a social ride NOT a training ride
Rule #3- Longer it takes YOU to descend, MORE TIME it gives me to annoy people at the bottom
Rule #4- See Rules #1, #2 and #3

*** With that said, this is NOT a Newbie Ride! If you can't keep up with the slowest riders on the fireroads and easy sections, I could see how that could "bum" people out!

See you there!

I believe that slow climbing is more likely to "bum" people.

Anyway, here's a quick panorama from Simi Peak. Dead Cow FR is at the bottom and climbs to the left. You can pick up the top of Suicide there or take Fo's entrance around the peak.

Suicide descends to the right and mostly out of sight thanks to terrain and bushes. The major singletrack you see serves as a connector from the bottom of Suicide (right run) to Dead Cow.

There is more terrain below the turn to Dead Cow.
The ride description leaves it out of the ride. I think some of the video was on what should be called Suicide II (?). After that you have some climbing to return. Pictures from part II.

Look, I'm a beginner, I did it solo a couple months back, no support. Nothing there that if you feel intimidated about, stop and walk it. It's very doable if you swallow your pride and don't worry about peer pressure and walk it.

If you choose to ride technical, stay off the front brake, keep some momentum going forward, and get your CG back on the rear tire as well as look ahead, not at your wheels. If you have 5 inches or more, you'll stick it, what ever you are aiming at to go through or over. Using too much front brakes on the loose small fine shale and rock will dump you lickety split. Suprisingly, a little speed and velocity is your friend, it carries you over most of the stuff without deflecting your mass and your line.
Walk today, ride tomorrow,
crash today, cry in sorrow.

Too many ups???
What goes up, must come down. Right?

But in all fairness, if somebody truly hates to climb, this would not be the best loop to ride.

If you guys are riding suicide I'll probably come, I'll be hiking up if I go, instead of riding. Anyone else want to make this a dh ride, hike up dead cow then ride down suicide.

The Dead Cow ascent (which can be bypassed by taking the neighborhood streets and connecting to Palo Comado to get back to Poacher's) is the only steep climb of this route. Most everything else is a pretty easy grade or a quick up ... unless you do Gaspipe as an out-and-back.
