Default 12 Hours of Temecula #1

Anyone else signed up for the 12 Hours on Temecula on 1/26?

http://www.12hrsoftemecula.com/12hrs...culapage1.html

Pho'd Up convinced me to sign up. This will be my first endurance event.

Original intent was to get a feel for how I will do on longer rides like CC.

Any guesses as to how long I can last for?

Hey Surlygal,

I decided I wasn't going to camp this time. Just drive out b/c it was going to be too cold for my wimpy azz.

Be we should try to coordinate so we can all get a STR Pit row next to eachother for sure. My GF will probably appreciate that.

Thanks,
Carl

Btw Dubjay, my guess is you're doing the full 12hours unless, that smell of Pulled Pork Sanwiches and Chili overwhelms you.

I don't know about the full 12 hours. I guess I'll have to see how motivated I am after 5-6.

So what's the deal with this pulled sandwich anyways? Will it fit in my pack?

Anyone interested in signing up as fun team? I'm not interested in pushing the limit, just want to hang out, have some fun and ride a little. I only feel like riding 2-3 laps maybe 4 so anyone want to join a 5 person fun team? BBQ, beer, hang out and ride a little.

Anyone interested in the "slow" but fun team?

Duke,

You should check with some of guys/gals in this thread. They were looking for some racers a few months ago.

Default This might cause a delay

Now that I read it more carefull - the closures will be in the opposite directions if we're coming from OC - but just in case...

Full lane closures planned for 91 at Green River

Detours suggested on I-10 or Route 60 to connect with Inland Empire Jan.25-26.

By ELLYN PAK
THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

There will be full lane closures on the 91 Freeway next weekend to make way for construction.

The westbound direction at Green River Road will close between 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 and 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26.

The eastbound direction at the same location will close between 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 and 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 27.

Motorists should use I-10 or Route 60 as east and west routes into and out of the Inland Empire; the 57 Freeway to reach the 10 and 60; and I-15, Route 71 or I-215 to travel north and south.

Default Course pre-ride

I took two laps out at Vail Lake this morning.

http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=11841

Each lap is 9.8 miles and and 1248ft according to Geoladders. Garmin training center says 9.8 miles with 1401ft.

Here's my breakdown of the course.

First 2 miles - flat fireroad, nice view of the lake.

At mile 3 begins a long steady climb on more fireroad. Think "I Think I Can" with some sections that are a little steeper. Climb lasts till about the 4.25 mile mark

At that point, the singletrack begins. It's much more technical that I expected. There are some switchbacks and steeps that are a little loose. There's a rock section that I walked on my first lap, but cleaned my second time around. I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to try and clean it though. So expect some steep up and downs until about the 5.7 mile mark. I have a feeling there will be a lot of falls here when people get tired. I think for the race, I'm going to try and conserve more energy here instead of charging all the little uphills.

From there, you hit fireroad again for a bit, until you enter some more rolling single/doubletrack. This is a fun little section where you can get some good speed going. Some sections feel like a pump track - lots of little ups and downs.

There's a steep climb (last climb of the lap) at the end. It's cleanable, but again, not sure if it's worth the effort.

Trail was sandy in a few spots, but otherwise very very fun.

Forgot to add in my lap times. First lap, I ended up with a 1:16 roll time. After I knew what to expect, I ended up with a 1:12 second lap. I'm not sure if I should push any faster than that if I expect to still be riding after a few hours.

See you all next week!

that new singletrack is going to be loose and nasty by night fall. nearly need to slow to a track stand in the switchbacks. i wonder if little rain this week will firm the new stuff up?

so where is this new single track? after the dam climb? The maps they show are not very descriptive. And if it is after the dam climb, where does it go back onto one of the old courses at? (think back to the june 07 course)

the new singletrack starts about 20 yards after the new singletrack from the #2 race of last year. after you drop back down to the fireroad, you head right back up again off to the left.

adds a lot to the course. w/o a pre-ride there is no way to get an idea of what it is like.....totally caught me off guard compared to everything else out there.

Current forecast shows a chance of showers for Saturday. We're still a few days out so who knows.

But - in any case, does this event go on rain or shine?

Rain Or Shine - Here we go!
Yep we may be racing in the rain!
I have been watching the forecast for a while and even if it rains it sholdnt be a very hard one. very light and patchy all day. But of course Vail Is in the corridor and often times we get missed by everything. But my crew and I are ready with umbrellas and coffee. On a good note Vail also holds the water very well. I do most of my trail work in the rain. The soil at Vail soaks up the water pretty well and the mud is usually at a minimum. Who knows it might just be the fastest course to date!

Neil & his team did the 24 of Granny Gear last spring at Vail lake it poured for 48hrs straight. The sun came out on race day and Neil thought the course was in the best shape it had ever been.

Should be fun, rain just adds to the sufferring

Do you guys know if there are tents or EZ-ups in the pit areas? I don't mind riding in the rain, but I'd prefer to stay out of the rain when I'm in the pits.
