I'm not really familiar to the So. County area. I will be having some work done on my truck at Outlaw Offroad, it is near Bake and Portola streets. I believe Whiting Ranch is still closed (correct me if I'm wrong), was hoping to ride there while the work was being done.
Are there any trails within reason that I could ride to? I was looking at Trabuco which seems fairly close on the map but any help would be appreciated. |

Whiting is still closed and will remain closed for possibly a year or more to allow regrowth. I live pretty close to the Live Oak entrance by Alton and Towne Centre. If you want a really close quick ride there is a long fire road/horse trail that runs along lake forest drive called Serrano Creek Trail. It starts next to the Oakley building and can take you all the way down to the 5 freeway:

That sounds like a fun little ride? Is it the same trail that hooks up by Bake pkwy? And where exactly do you catch it by Oakley? |

The trailhead is directly across the street from the North side of the Oakley building and to the East of Wahoo's Fish Tacos. You will see a small wooden gate about 3 feet tall. Corner of Portoloa and Glenn Ranch Road. If you go past Ellipse you passed it.

Since you'll be on bake near the 5, you can access that serrano trail on bake. head up bake and you'll see the trail entrance on bake and toledo.
the first 1-2 miles is along a flood channel. You'll cross trabuco and head up past more of the same, but with up hill. You'll eventually hit Dimension. Cross that and keep following up until you get to Wahoos/Etnies skate park. that'll be the end of it. nothing challening, but better than sitting on your A at the shop.

From a technical standpoint it's not much of a ride but it's dirt and a place to take your mind off of things. Watch out for the piles of horse doo doo, riders, walkers/joggers, around the blind turns. Also, it's pretty muddy/wet going through the tunnels. A few of them have concrete walkways just wide enough to ride your bike on. Enjoy!

When are you going to drop your truck off? How much time will you have to ride? My schedule allows for more riding during the week this time of year and I might be able to show you some dirt. If not, then maybe someone else can.

That trail looks pretty technical, no doubt they closed it after that fall you took. |

Oh yeah - Dman, if you've got a few hours, you could ride along Portola to Glenn Ranch, up and over to El Toro, and connect to the Live Oak trail into O'Neill Regional park. It's nothing technical, but it'd get you some decent climbing if you're into that. Nice view too at the top of the hill where Live Oak and Vista trails meet (next to the cell tower)
