Trailhead Meet up with other socal mountain bikers to organize group rides.

Horrible VQ Training Ride
Calendar: Rides & Things
mechmann
Segregated non-bubb.

01-05-2008
This ride is going to suck. You don't want to join me, but I decided to post it anyway.

It is all about mental toughness.

This ride will happen rain, snow, or shine.

I have modified the route as it has been suggested that the severe rainfall will create impassible stream crossings and trail damage from hiking/riding.

Route: Up ITT, up MDTT to Santiago Peak, Traverse MDTT to Blue Jay, back across MDTT and down ITT.

I told you, you don't want to join me.

This ride will start at 7:30AM at the bottom of ITT.

I will not be responsible for anyone other than myself on this ride. You need to make sure you have what you need and can keep a decent pace. This ride is not for wimps.

For the last time, you don't want to join me.

It would be easy if it wasn't supposed to be raining.

FWIW, I'd rather hike up WHT than hike up Trabuco. I won't be able to ride my Dos like I could my Enduro on NYE, and Trabuco is longer and farther away from ITT. Just IMO.

if the stream crossings are not possible near the bottom of HJ, i will be forced to turn around. if that happens, i may go back up and do UHJ again, then traverse Main Divide over to Blue Jay and come back.

this ride WILL happen, but i will NOT be killed trying to cross a stream that is unsafe. i have spent enough time in and around major snow melt flows in the mountains back east to know what is crossable and what isn't.

"Up ITT, up MDTT to UHJ, down UHJ and HJ, up Trabuco, back across MDTT and down ITT."

I can't keep up with all the acronyms. Much less that ride!! "Enjoy" it...

UHJ = Upper Holy Jim
HJ = Holy Jim
WHT = West Horse Thief

i only have five long training days left on the calendar. gotta get what i can, while i can.

imagine what those poor bastards are going through back east with snow and ice and temps way below zero! you just have to be prepared for the weather.

They don't always ride in direct rain. Many of the trails are somewhat covered by trees. Most of your route is entirely exposed to the elements.

Also, riding on frozen snow is quite different than riding on sticky gooey tire slogging mud while it is drenching you.

Smokes! I don't think you guys need to be worried about being ready for the VQ. I think the VQ needs to be worried about the Manns.

That's quite a course. I'll do my anti-rain dance Friday for you guys.

Justin thinks we are WAY behind in our training.

Clearly it would be damaging to take one Saturday off or do a shorter ride where we wouldn't die.

I actually propose just riding ITT and Main Divide all day and stay off the singletrack, which gets torn up in the rain (as was evidenced to me riding San Juan and Hurkey, both of which have some bad tire ruts from people riding in the mud).

Well it's definitely better to pay now then to pay later and not make the cut offs come race day.
