oh boy, that sounds like fun, but i'm not sure my bike can handle it...realistically, how much travel does a bike need to ride that kind of terrain without killing oneself in the process?

"REALISTICALLY" any mid-level bike can handle the course. Your bike is just fine- thank you very much!

It all depends on YOU. Go as fast or as slow as you want.
Riding DH will improve your bike handling! A few runs on a "DH" course has an amazing way of making the sketchy sections at your local trail seem not so sketchy!

What I will say is: Fontana is loose and rocky! You will most likely fall a time or two! Bring your pads- just to be safe!

P.S.- Haven't you already been to Fontana for a clinic or two? What are you worried about?

Default actually...

I did the Fontana thing once and it was more about riding the 4x course and dirt jumps. i would love to do the downhill stuff with a beginner type crowd (so i don't feel like a total schmo) and get some pointers from people. of course, that means buying some real pads and a full face helmet. *sigh*. will the spending for this sport never end, dammit!? (i'm dramatically shaking my fist at the sky right now.)

You can ride Fontucky on a hardtail if you chose. But more travel out there usaully equals more fun.
Jake will be on his Kikapu, which has 5 in the front and 4 in the back. Bring what you enjoy riding the most.

dino almost sounds like a DH racer, crazy because he has never raced DH. he can't even assemble the bike that he does have that would be worthy of DH...

Hey grasshopper (sorry OMR), I think there are plenty of DH riders that couldn't assemble there own bikes....I don't think that what the question was. Everyone has there strengths and weaknesses. Maybe your strength is picking on Dino.

It sounds to me that Dino knows the rider and is trying to give spkltrout some confidence in himself and his bike. A lot of beginners lack confidence and need a little encouragement now and then.

PS. I should be there if it doesn't rain.

Sorry...just my .02

speckledtrout is a she.

i just like messing with dino, you were right on with that one!!! dino knows i love him. it isn't about him building it himself, it is about him having the frame and fork for this long without having it built!!! i just want to see what dino can do on it! besides, once he rides VPP he can't spout off all the time about DW LInk!

back on topic.... i think speckledtrout SHOULD go out there and ride!!!! sounds like a killer time, unfortunately we will be suffering properly on some long climb...

You can come along, (as can all you big kid's) it's open for everyone, just geared more towards the kids.

Maxwell - Thank you for doing this. Does she need a full face helmet? And is this going to be painful for me?

I'm gonna leave that up to you.
Lacey has ridden it with her regular helmet (she wear a Giro Xen) and used her fullface when she raced. Jake has a Giro Hex (Xen copy) and that's what he wears.

"And is this going to be painful for me?"

That depends on how hard you plan on hitting the ground.

Hope you can join us!

Elvia- Julia can borrow my full face helmet! The pads MAY not fit her though!
My late Christmas present.... Julia (one step closer to) racing!
Will bring them to the Loop...

Default I have some gear to lend

I have some extra pads and stuff. I may even be able to dig up a loaner full face helmet. ZI will bring what I have to lend out, but it is mostly too big for little kids.

WoOoOoOoW! Nice move Tani
I would say Julia is about 5'6" tall. She can try my helmet on Thursday. The leg armor is what (I)- (cough EZZYRIDE cough) are worried about!

XC? Super D? DH? Not sure which she will like most.
What I do know is the girl was born to race! "STR'S Little Girl"- one step closer....
