Trailhead Meet up with other socal mountain bikers to organize group rides.

San Juan 12/30
Calendar: Rides & Things
allison
Trail Paparazzi

12-30-2007
Anyone without much cash left after 07 (unable to do Rwanda)...

We'll be riding up San Juan trail, probably breaking off for a short loop around Viejo Tie, etc. and coming down Old San Juan trail.

I'm guessing it'll be around 24-26mi?

I'm bringing out my Enduro, so it's NOT a training ride. Moderate pace, a few regroups here and there on the climb up.

We'll definitely be stopping at Cocktail for a food break both times.

RIDING around 9:30 am at the lower parking lot.
RSVP'd Yes: 5
  • allison [12-29-2007 11:22 AM] - I'll be leading and taking photos from mid-back pack.
  • mechmann [12-29-2007 11:27 AM] - should be fun! going down Viejo Tie and up Chiquito to make a figure 8 on the top.
  • PacMan [12-29-2007 05:05 PM] - Against my own better judgement
  • epicriderat [12-29-2007 06:00 PM] - I haven't ridden the SJT in ages, if you don't mind someone new, I'm in for the ride.
  • schleppp [12-29-2007 07:35 PM]
RSVP'd Maybe: 1
  • Waldo [12-29-2007 12:34 PM] - Had to skip Rwanda, and have been wanting to do this route. Lemme check with the boss

What's the elevation and pace going to be? I'm a little apprehensive because I still have this nagging chest cold. I'd hate to be a big boat anchor.

No idea on pace. Hopefully slightly faster than a typical huge Noble day (but mostly only because it's clearly gonna be a small group).

Elevation.. well the Old San Juan route is like 3200ft, so adding in Viejo Tie and whatever to get back (I don't know the route at all once we turn off of Old San Juan) may be 800-1000ft more, but also may be a lot less.

doug...

if you want to attend, then come along. san juan is great for it's bailout (just turn around and go back down). once you get to cocktail rock, there really isn't THAT much climbing.

FWIW, I'm bringing my AM rig and would like to have FUN!

I'll probably bring elbow/forearm pads and my Veggie knee's. Not necessary, but I usually fall on San Juan.

If you're going to be adding in Chiquito and Viejo Tie there's some fairly steep climbs but they're all pretty short.

I'm strongly considering it. My Yeti is at the shop getting the TALAS rebuilt. If it's done today, I may join you.

it will only be the top section of Chiquito. there are some climbs, but none too bad. we will ride the clockwise SJT loop to Viejo Tie, go down that to Chiquito, up Chiquito to the SJT loop, left on that and continue the clockwise loop back to Cocktail Rock.

Default Where? and Who do I look for?

This really sounds like my kind of ride. However, I've only done SJT once before and I'm not really sure where to meet up with you folks. I'll be driving down from Riverside. Anyone have good diretions to the parking lot?
Also, what cars will you be driving? I'll be rolling up in a black Subaru. Hope to see guys and gals tomorrow.

I'm picking up my Yeti in a few minutes. I'll be there, but I'm apprehensive as usual--new trail, chest cold, my usual idiotic climbing anxiety.

Directions please.

Hey Van - basically you take Ortega Hwy west for about 12 miles or so? You'll go through the construction area (I'm totally not sure if it is open or closed - last time we went through it was totally open, but typically they are down to one lane), across a narrow bridge. On the right hand side there is the San Juan fire station and a sign for a camp. Turn right there. Drive down the paved/dirt road until you see the big parking area on the left.

We'll be in a black Chevy truck.

You can also go here and look up directions: http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=129

We will be doing *all* of that route, and adding in a bit of extra with Viejo Tie and Chiquito. But, I'm not familiar with either of those I know there is some chunk and will be a few hike a bike sections, but should be fun.

Make sure to pack plenty of food for about 6 hours or so, tubes, tools, water, etc.

Should be a beautiful day!!

I'm not sure what I'm wearing yet, but probably either my Path argyle or my Chipotle jersey.

Directions:
http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=33...7.510302&h1=en

just a last minute reminder (as allison stated) we will be out there most of the day.

just in case, i will post the standard rundown:

please bring plenty of water and some trail food. i will have extra as usual. bring tubes, mine are 29er tubes and are a pain in 26" tires. bring appropriate clothes in case the temps drop. to give you an example, i will have my vest, a wool undershirt, arm and leg warmers, and a skull cap to go along with my shorts and jersey. bring full fingered gloves as a long descent in cool weather can really freeze your fingers (i bring an extra set in my backpack so that i can have dry gloves on the way down). there are no water crossings, so an extra set of socks is not necessary.

after the ride we will be hitting up a great little mexican food joint over in Capistrano. anyone that wants to join us over there is welcome!

I'll probably have way too much as well.

Wool base layer, jersey, vest, gloves, warmer gloves for late descent, wool socks (i'm obsessed), wool arm warmers, will be wearing knee warmers all day most likely. I'll probably have a skull cap, but probably won't wear it.

I'll have my full 3L of water, a Clif bar, Odwalla bar, Uncrustable, pack of bloks, pack of Sport Beans, some gel...

Just stuff to keep me moving all day!

I'd like to enjoy a Guinness in the lot if it isn't too cold when we are done.

Basically if you get the straight passing lanes you need to turn around.

But, the fire station is a clear decent sized building on the right hand side of the road if you are traveling west.

It's pretty much right after you get through the construction signs/vehicles, etc.

Once you've turned off of 74/Ortega you'll pass a house and other small buildings. But, the parking lot is pretty hard to miss. I'm sure there will be a good amount of people out.
