After communicating with some of the veteran SS'ers we've come to about two options
Gene suggested San Juan Trail to Rocks. He feels there's some good technical switchbacks with some nice flat recovery sections. Neil like SJT but suggested that Aliso would draw a bigger group. Since there's good steady climbing all the way up TOTW. Whichever it may be it'll be on a Saturday morning most likely in February or so after the VQ (need to find out the date for that) So i'm putting up a poll of where you SS'ers would like to give it a whirl. Although this ride is for riders new to SS'ing (self included) all are welcome and heck geared bikes can come as well There's love for all |

Although considered too easy by many, Aliso Woods is a prefect place to SS. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want. Rather than going out and having a suffer fest ... much more enjoyable to do a fun fest. I can suggest some routes that will test your climbing and descending abilities ... but ones that you will learn on... not just suffer on. The great news is that you're not miles and miles from civilization... and best of all, beer is nearby!

Ok, Aliso would be a good one too, but there are no sustained climbs, but like OMR said, it can be easy or it can be hard. The VQ is on a Sat, Mar 1st. The reason I chose to do this Newbie SSufferfest after the VQ is that Mt weekends from here on out are already spoken for with training rides, "guided" or not and trailwork, with absolutely no hammering or big epic rides the week before the VQ which would be Feb 23rd to the 29th. I could move one of my training days to a Sunday.

San Juan is tough on a SS. Stick to the fire roads at first. I would like to suggest El Moro if you want something else besides Aliso.

SART has always been my favorite SS Trail. Maybe show some new dirt at the same time. Park bottom Glass Rd. take river road to South Fork Camground and back to Glass. Short but you can continue on as a out and back for more miles.

hmm...all great suggestions...blackstar sounds like something doable...but i like Gregg's rationale that it's near civilization e.g. BEEEEER (stadium brewery comes to mind)
keep um coming folks |

I'd like to second blackstar. It's just long enough and steep enough to give you a sampler of the suffering to come LOL.

I'd rather be climbing...

I'm not picky. Just tell me when & where.
I've done Aliso on my fully rigid SS and did not really enjoy it. However, that was solo; I know that any ride with an STR group would be a lot more fun. Either way, I'm in if my schedule allows.

Although I voted for Aliso I would also like to pitch the San Clemente single tracks. I road a SS full rigid last time and it was a blast! Either way, my SS should be done by then and I'm hoping this will be an easy ride to break in my legs

I did the San Juan SS sufferfest in June or so of this year at San Juan. Great turnout, lots of SS's!! I had a much easier time on Thanksgiving. Was great riding it rigid.

I agree San Clemente is a lot fun, but there are too many areas where this trail would cause a traffic jam. You would have to stop too many times because of some of the turns and steeps, it would have no flow to it and therefore take forever to get in 11, 12 miles. And this is looking like a big group. It's best when you could just ride and keep a good flow and rhythm. JMHO

How many miles left?!
|
I'm partial to Aliso, since this ride is primarily to break-in the SS noobs. You don't want riders getting too frustrated or tired which starts eliminating the fun factor. Lots of variety and the climbs are short for the most part. Ample parking and close to beverages (if ya know what I mean) and food/picnic area.
