Bump...
Waldo & I did a nice loop at Chino Hills yesterday that would be a great option for the SS noobs. We started at the Park entrance and immediately headed up North Ridge. The first 2/3 of North Ridge was a breeze, but the last 1/3 was painfully fun. We took North Ridge all the way to an un-named single track that led to 4 Corners. For the SS sufferfest, we could then head down Raptor to the Ranger station. We could then either head back UP Raptor, or take Telegraph back to 4 Corners. A quick trip up Bovinian would take us to South Ridge and back out. That would make it about 20 miles, with some pretty good climbs. I did the entire thing on my ss 29er yesterday (minus Raptor) and it was 16 miles on the dot. I was tired afterward, but not beat up. Adding in Raptor could make this a great, tough ride for folks looking to break in their SS. Heck, I will probably end up doing this before March & will let you know how it goes. Just wanted to throw it out there...

El Moro / Laguna Coast.
Do I Think I Can, Old Emerald, Missing Link, Rattlesnake, maybe more. Plenty of ups and downs but not a lot of super steep or super flat sections. Has enough longer climbs, and enough rolling type terrain that it'll be fun on singlespeed but not a total meat grinder for those who don't ride single full time or are new to it. My 2 cents. |

Like I said earlier, I am up for whatever the group decides.
However, I am con-fee-yuuused as hell. Several folks in this thread have mentioned that Aliso would be too easy and that there are no sustained climbs. If Aliso is the spot that folks decide, is Mathis not going to be part of the route? People post that Cholla is hard enough on a ss. Cholla is nothing compared to Mathis. I'm on a fully rigid 29er with 32/18 gearing and Mathis is an absolutely killer. It's doable, but I cannot imagine ANYone claiming that Mathis on a ss would not count as a sustained climb. Either way, I'm in. But am I crazy? Or just a wimp?

I think that Aliso or the loop or Santa Rosa Plateau would be good. Since we don't know anyone's abilities yet, short climbs and plenty of options are a good thing. Last thing we want is someone to call it quits 1/4 way up san juan or having to walk most of the ride just to stick it out. We're all there to give each other encouragement, advice, and swap initiation stories. Lets make the first ride a fun one, not a sink or swim, this is what you signed up for, so tough it out ride.

I think for a newbie SS ride you want something with both ups and down so I would throw BS out of the mix since thats all basically one big climb. The loop would be a great ride because its a good mixture of everything, has a good meeting point and also plenty of places to eat after. I would like to throw my vote in for Oneil/Tijeras. You can eliminate the big climbs from this ride if you want to and make it a good 15-16 miles ( or less ) with just some small climbs for new SS'ers with a great mixture of singletrack, water crossings, open stretches, etc... There are also plenty of places to eat afterwards.
This is how I would make-up a SS Oneil/Tijeras ride. Meet up in Oneil Park and head into Tijeras from the parking lot (backwards from the newb Oneil ride) Follow through the jungle section, behind the golf course and past the waterworks turn off Follow down to underneath OSO pkwy and make a left up to the street You can have an extra credit section right there and proceed another 2 miles up the ridge for those who want to then come back down and meet the group Cross the street and follow the trail behind the homes and hook back up with Tijeras trail Following that past the baseball park Finish at the Gate on Antonio without taking the climbs to the right Then just a short street section back up to Oneil descend down the short singletrack in Oneil back to the parking lot

SART is the way to break you into SSing right. You can make it easy or you can make it a b!tch. Either way, there are enough of us who have ridden SART to make it an enjoyable trip for everyone. Alot of different routes for whatever your ability. Besides, it's new dirt to some and a happy hunting ground to others. Enjoyable for the whole family!
As for beer, that's a different story. Not a ton of options until you hit the flatlands.

heck it looks fun enough that a 2nd loop at a faster pace for those of us that'd like to wouldn't be too far out of the picture....
