Default VQ/CC Training Ride Upper Holy Jim Loop

OK, after a break from the earlier training rides and resting the knees, I'm back! This ride is a good one. We will Climb Lower Holy Jim and then go up the Main Divide to Upper Holy Jim. The faster riders can "BAG" the peak for some extra credit and after a regroup at the Upper HJ trailhead, we will descend both Upper and Lower Jim.

http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=217

This ride is for those training for the the VQ/CC who have not done these trails. Although this is a TRAINING RIDE and not a newbie ride, please be sure you can keep up as to not hold up the group. I will sweep the "B" group ride.

I will have 2 start times, If you feel you need more time to climb, I suggest you start earlier. I will sweep the later start so the "B" group riders have a 30 min head start. If you have any doubts, start early. Anyone interested in leading or sweeping PM me. If anyone has radios, please bring them, cell phones do not work up there. When you RSVP, please indicate which group(A or B) you plan on riding with. Thanks, hope to see you there.

Meet at Trabuco Wash area(VQ/CC) finish area.

From Santiago Canyon Rd, (depending on which direction you come from), turn right (coming from El Toro) or left (coming from the 55 fwy/Chapman/241 toll rd) on Live Oak(Cook's Corner) and proceed about 5-6 miles. At the O'neill entrance, the road changes to Trabuco Canyon Rd. go past that about 1/2 mile and just before the paved hill going up to RSM, there is a dirt lot, Park there. It is the VQ/CC finish area

When: DEC 22
TIME: Early start meet at 8am ride by 8:30am. Late start meet at 8:30, ride by 9am. I will be there at 8am and leave at 9am with the "A" group, then sweep up Holy Jim.

Please bring plenty of water. A camelbak and bottles if you have a cage on your bike. Be sure you bring all essentials(extra tubes, multi tool, ..etc)

This is the last of the Intro/training rides and the pace will pick up in Jan. PM me if you have any questions.

I think I'll be there. I'm not doing the VQ/CC but I'm still training for next seasons mtn and road races.

It better be dry!

UHJ was in fabulous shape. someone has done a ton of work on the switchbacks. i made all of them except one where i brain farted and dove head first into a manzanita.
There was a patch of snow on each trail. UHJ right near the top of the trail, and HJ about 1/2 mile from the hike a bike or so.

UHJ actually had a big rain rut going down the entirety of it. So, I don't agree that it is in fabulous shape

Remember, "B" group leaves 30 min earlier to give them time since they may need it. "A" group will then leave 30 min later and be a much faster pace. If you feel you need the head start, leave at 8:30am. Please indicate which group you wish to ride with when you rsvp so I have an idea and may need someone to lead/sweep the "A" or lead the "B" I'll sweep the "B". Thanks

Man, this is a fun ride! I'll probably be there, depending on how work goes Friday night.

I'll be in the "B" group, cause I'm SLOW!

How long should this ride take? I have to be in San Diego for a Holiday lunch at the Grand Parents, i dont mind leaving directly from the trails, but do you think we will be down the hill by 10:30 or 11 if i leave with the early group?

You're bringing heavy bikes?

I have a heavy bike!

Can I bring mine?

I'll still stay in the "B" group though.
