Default Duncan Canyon/San Savine Pics Posted

Greetings All-
I've read posts for a while but never really posted- I ride the Duncan Canyon/San Savine trail weekly. (I really don't know if that is the real name of the trails.) The part below Joe Elliot Campground. I am planning on riding up to the camp ground on 12/22. I live about 3 miles from the trail head- So I was planning on riding from my house- If anyone is interested, we can meet at Rosena Park (off of Beech).

I am planning on leaving between 5:30 and 6. I've gotten as close as two miles from the campground before I ran out of time- I am thinking it will take me between 4 1/2-5 hours.

I'm open to suggestions- But I am using this ride as warm-up for the Project Rwanda held on the 29th. (It was my first organized ride.)

Default Have you

ever done this ride before? I've rode the entire thing from here in Fontana over and it was an arse kicker, but we fought wind for the first part of the day. Three ways of6 looking at this ride.

1) Do we ride till we hit Joe Elliot campground
2) Do we ride till we have 3 to 4 hours into the ride?
3) Till somebody says that's enough

Last time I did this ride we had 14 hours into it.

I live right off Beech too, where did you want to start? San Sevaine trailhead?

The closest I've gotten to the campground was about 1/2 mile past the 2 1/2 mile sign. I was about 4+ hours into the ride and hide to get home for some child care issues.

I was planning an out and back- If the legs are too sore, I was going to ride back on the street via Lytle Creek Rd. (I think that's the name. It's the spooky Gas Station that moonlights as a BBQ place.)

I was just going to ride to the trail head. I was planning on starting behind the new houses in Hunter's Ridge. There is a new park and Fire station close to where I pick up the trail. We could meet there. The paved road goes to dirt for a really short stretch. I take a right at a small horse farm; where they are eventually gating off the road. Then take a left where a newer wash was put in.

Refresh my memory. Is this the canyon that leads up into Lytle Creek?

Kind of... It really is the Lytle Creek side of the Cucamonga Canyon trail. I've never ridden the side from Alta Loma, only on this side- I've heard once you get to Joe Elliot it becomes impassable.

A correction-
The path that I am suggesting is about 20 miles to the camp ground- On the way down we can pick a couple different paths depending on leg power.
Also- we can meet at Coyote Canyon Park
5051 Duncan Canyon Road
I'd like to ride as early as possible- we can decide on a time-

Seems like 8:30 is a great meeting time- Let's meet at Coyote Canyon Park (5051 Duncan Canyon Road, Fontana)- I'll ride there, I live about 2 miles from the park, so I'll be on my bike-

Thinking about joining you guys for this. Wondering what the route plans were. Obviously meet at the park... ride up lytle creek then over?

This used to be a loop I did twice a week about 3 years ago. The first gated rd on the "south?left" side turns into singletrack that is/was usually overgrown...this dumps you out up where they are/were builing the new/larger homes in hunters ridge. I'm not sure of other ways out from there except to take the fireroad back.

Or were you guys talking about riding up from hunters ridge?

Anyone ever ridden the middle fork area in lytle creek/baldy

Planning on riding the fire road behind hunter's ridge to the San Savine trail then up to the camp ground- I think that the gate that leads to the switch backs your talking about is about half way up to where we are planning to climb.

On the way down we could try the single track, we could go back to the fire road, or we could ride to Lytle creek road and ride the road back to the park- I just want get to the camp ground- It's kind of been my whale the last couple of months that I just can't capture- With the weather and family illness, I can't carve out the time to climb-

Forecast calls for some of that famous El Cajon Pass wind and some chilly temperatures early on. Might want to bring some kind of warmer if needed. The parking lot should be empty and is right next to a fire station.

Does that mean we can hit up the fire fighters for a ride to the top?

Bringing arm warmers and an extra pair of socks for the trip. My Camelbak is gonna weight a ton.

What kind of ride time are we talking 6hrs...8hrs...Mrtawney how long have you been riding on the way out before turning around? I just want to make sure to have enough food/water... but trying not to bring too much water... its heavy, no?

The closest I've been to the campground has been 2 miles. I had to get home and take care of the two-year old. It took me a little over four hours to get there. About 45 minutes down- I think we should be done in 6-

My off-brand camelback sucks... I'll carry two bottles of water-

Where are you riding from?

What is the official start time now? I see 6, 7, and 8.

The nice thing about this ride is that when you get tired it's all downhill when you turn around.

8:30am is the start time @ 5051 Duncan Canyon Road. Yahoo, Google, and Live show that address as dirt but it's now a park next to a fire station.
