Default Palm Canyon Epic / Art Smith - 12/23

This ride is fun. Be fully prepared for a long day full of climbing and descending. I believe the ride is around 30+ miles. Click here for a recap of the ride Last years RR. Typically the group meets at the IMAX theatre and shuttles to the top from there. This time we are going to mix it up a little and instead of finishing with Cindy Whitehead, we are going to do Art Smith trail. We will be meeting at (see link below). When heading up the 74 from Palm Springs, this is the end of the Art Smith trail. Here there is a parking lot with a big sign that says "Art Smith Trailhead." You almost can't miss it. Don't be confused though, shuttling this ride doesn't make it easy. Here are the details:

When: 12/23/07 @ 7AM (At Map location)
Where: Click Here (in Palm Springs)
What: Palm Canyon Epic / Art Smith

After the ride, we usually hit up this Mexi place to eat and drink .

Let's figure this out. Post any questions...

Any questions?

Update: Since it seems like people think that we may not make it out before dark, I would recommend bringing your lights if you have them for your bike. To ensure that we are off the trail before dark and don't hold up the group, please make sure that you have some sort of tire sealant system ie: tubeless w. stans, tuffy liners, slime tubes, etc.

I'm not trying to hijack this but would there be any interest in mixing things up a little by finishing with Art Smith instead of Cindy Whitehead? I've never ridden Art Smith and would like to check it out. If not, I'm fine with the regular route.

Art Smith would make the shuttle a little less time consuming too.

Craig's pretty good on his SS hard tail, but I think DHing at Bootleg may be more difficult for him

Thanks for switching this up, C. Hahn and Cindy's is a lot of fun. Hopefully it's worth it.

Nancy - Bootleg would be awesome but I'm heading to AZ on the 24th so that would be a lot of driving. Have fun out there.

I'll have to get off my duff and convert the Terremoto to tubeless, but yeah, I'd really like to make this ride.

Currently working weekends and will have to lobby for the day off, hence the "Maybe."

Default pce/art smith

Yo Craig,
I don't know if we can finish this ride in the winter.
This means we have to ride the wash, or ride back up dunn rd to the oasis. If we have to climb dunn we are adding 1 hour to pce, adding art smith adds 2-3 hours to pce. That means 81/2 to 9 hrs on the trail with no mechanicals or flats! There isn't any water any where on this ride. A minimum of 150 oz. will be needed.
I might suggest climbing dunn to art smith and doing this loop of about 22 miles as a tester before looping this to pce. This ride is more strenuous than pce with more technical climbing.
Something to ponder

Tom - If we cut out Hahn Buena Vista and took Art Smith from the Oasis wouldn't that actually be a shorter ride?

7AM Dang I've got to leave Pasadena at like 5AM. I should have my new 29er built by then and want to make this ride. I have been wanting to do this ride for years.

Sometime before February I am looking to do Art Smith Trail as a out and back. There is also a trail on Santa Rosa Mt. called Sawmill Trail that has my interest.

Dean,

Brian from The Path was telling me a few weeks ago, he climbed Santa Rosa down sawmill to Palm Canyon to the Oasis, and down Art Smith. All in one day. He mentioned that is was around 45 miles. Now that is ballz.

Exactly what I was thinking. I am checking egoladders right now...

After checking ego, I calculated that Art Smith is almost 7 miles long with climbing involved... Thoughts? I think we will be fine if we cut out Hahns and just to Art.
