Just saw another post where El Moro (our intended destination) will be closed tomorrow (Sunday).
What will be open for riding tomorrow?

Made a few calls this morning:
Aliso - recording still says closed. Laguna Coast Wilderness - Ranger said their trails are closed at least until Monday O'Neill - Ranger said their trails are still closed, probably for another 48 hours Santiago Oaks - Ranger (Maureen) said they have closures on lower trails, but maybe be opening some this afternoon. Call back after 11:00 for more. Contact info for all O.C. parks can be found here. Even if some do open or aren't controlled, they may still be pretty damp. As of 8pm, some of the streets in the Lake Forest/Mission Viejo area were still damp, so any clay soils in the region are probably still saturated. If you're going to ride today, choose your location carefully. Please don't leave tracks & ruts that may be there for months. (Off of soapbox - thank you)

Most people have no idea of park rules. I met three guys getting ready to ride Aliso yesterday around 2pm and let them know that the park was closed. They packed up and left.
I remember when I was a newbie I tried to ride santiago oaks after a particularly hard rain. I made it about a quarter mile before my tires stopped rolling from mud accumulation. My bike probably weighed 60lbs. |

Back on a bike...

Like some do, they will probably ride right past it. Went for a walk this morning and passed by the entrance. Mentioned park was closed to them, got the feedback of "nobody told me". Replied, "I just did". They rode off into the park...

Unfreakinbelievalbe!
Part of the education of a mountain biker is learning things like trail etiquette and trail preservation. Stuff like avoiding riding soon after a rain or during a park closure isn't automatic - usually as a newb, someone has got to tell you about these things. I know that when I first started, riding on a muddy track sounded 'fun' and based on TV commercials, what I thought MTB was all about. I quickly learned better. Same thing w/ park closures. You get this thought that, oh well, it's just me or a couple of us, and just this time. But when properly informed, its easy to see why we need to respect closures. However, these selfish assjacks have absolutely no excuse!! I was on the fence about posting pics of rulebreakers because I do think there is potential harm to the MTB community as a whole. But damn, when you hear a story like this, I'm thinking post away! Then I'm thinking, PLEASE let me meet one these guys on the trail... |
