Default Cleveland National Forest/ National Forest to Open/Cleveland NF reopening soon?

Just received word that the ANF is coordinating with the San Bernardino and Los Padres National Forests to reopen on Thursday November 8th.

"It has been confirmed that we will be lifting the forest closure, effective at 0001hrs Thursday, November 8th. We will issue a news release as soon as possible - I'm drafting it right now. (We are coordinating our announcement w/the Los Padres and San Bernardino NF's who are also lifting their forestwide closures on Thursday. Cleveland will follow on Saturday.) The areas effected by the Buckweed Fire and the Ranch Fire will remain closed under their own orders and we are preparing them right now. Please keep in mind that Fire conditions remain extreme and all prior fire restrictions will remain in effect. We will remain at "Extreme" for use restriction purposes." Anonymous Source

SWEET! So, basically all the national forests locally will be opened by this weekend? That's awesome if true!

I'm seriously missing some trails. And, while I don't miss it, seriously need to start training for VQ

I called yesterday and the lady told me that they would likely open it by this weekend. Stoked to see that it's going to be a little sooner.

I just called the Trabuco district of Cleveland National forest and only a portion may open this weekend. They won't know till Friday to be sure. That may not be enough time to post a training ride this Sat. I'll stick to my original plan of the "Tour De Aliso" Saturday.

Hopefully the area in San Diego will open soon, as well as some of the fire roads and trails not affected by the fires..

I'm supposed to ride with a buddy who is a Forest Service firefighter today. Jerk didn't tell me anything about this.

Hopefully, it's all true.

Angeles National Forest to End Temporary Emergency Closure
ARCADIA, Calif. – The temporary emergency closure that was put into effect for the Angeles National Forest on October 23, 2007, will be terminated on Thursday, November 8, 2007. The Angeles, along with the Los Padres, San Bernardino and Cleveland National Forests (NF), implemented the temporary closures during the recent fires due to extreme fire danger, and to protect public health and safety. These closures were left in place last weekend due to Santa Ana winds and on-going fire-related activities.
Forest Service officials have reevaluated current conditions for the four Forests based on a variety of criteria including the moisture level in vegetation, weather conditions and firefighter staffing/equipment needs. That assessment concludes that it is now possible to re-open the Angeles, Los Padres, and San Bernardino National Forests to visitors beginning Thursday. The Cleveland National Forest will re-open on Saturday, November 10, 2007.
All areas which were closed to the public prior to the temporary emergency closures will remain closed. In addition, some new specific areas within the Angeles National Forest that were damaged by the Buckweed and the Ranch fires will remain closed until rehabilitation efforts are completed. This includes Rower Flat Off Highway Vehicle and Drinkwater Flat areas which were burnt during the Buckweed fire. Please check with each Forest for site-specific information.
On the Angeles National Forest, the fire danger level will remain at Extreme since the moisture level in vegetation continues to be well below normal. Forest visitors need to be aware that current conditions are still very dry and serious. With the lack of rain, the risk of wildfire in the Forests is steadily increasing.

The following restrictions remain in effect for the Angeles NF:
§Wood or charcoal fires are not allowed anywhere on the Forest.
§Propane or jelled gas stoves will be allowed with a valid California Campfire Permit.
§Smoking is allowed only in enclosed buildings or vehicles.
§No fireworks.
§No shooting of tracer, armor piercing, Teflon or steel core ammunition.
§Forest Service approved spark arrestors are required on off-highway vehicles, chainsaws, and other internal combustion engines.
§Welding, grinding, cutting and use of explosives allowed only with permit.
§Geographic areas may be closed due to special circumstances.

It is important that everyone remains “situationally aware” of their surroundings and the responsibilities associated with visiting the Forest. The Forest Service wants to ensure that everyone has safe and enjoyable visit while increasing their awareness and understanding of the current situation and the potential for wildfire.
For more information on the closure on the Angeles NF, please contact one of the offices listed below or visit the Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles.

Forest Supervisor’s Office, Arcadia (626) 574-1613
Los Angeles River Ranger District, San Fernando (81 899-1900
San Gabriel River Ranger District, Glendora (626) 335-1251
*Note: The Santa Clara/Mojave Rivers Ranger District which was located in Saugus, CA, was destroyed in the Buckweed fire and a temporary office will be re-established soon.

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess maybe I won't need to drive too far now to beat the crowds at the local trails.

Default Cleveland NF reopening soon?

Does anybody know if they are planning on opening CNF within the next two weeks.
My LBS organizes a ride every year on Thanksgiving day. We ride to 4 corners, either up Harding or Maple S., and somebody from the shop drives a truck with the coffee and pastries.
I know that Harding is burned, but I was wondering about Maple Springs.

To be on the safe side your LBS should pick an Alternative location

I know that the CNF down in the Descanso Ranger district is planning on opening at 12:01 am Saturday.

So, if you are planning on riding Noble Canyon you should be good to go.

As far as CNF in the Santa Ana's? I don't think a re-opening date has been determined yet.

I do hope that they open unaffected portions in the next week or so, as I'd really like to get back up to ride San Juan over Thanksgiving. But, if that is closed I'll have to settle for something else.
